طَلبتَناyou summoned us قَبلَbefore سَلخِthe end of الشَّهرِthe month فَاِبتَدَرَتso they hastened
مِنّاfrom us الجسومُthe bodies بِلاwithout رَيْبٍdoubt وَتَرديدِand hesitation
You summoned us before the month’s end; then hastened
You summoned us before the end of last month, so
our bodies, without doubt or hesitation.
Our bodies hastened without doubt or hesitation.
وَقَدand indeed رَكِبناwe sailed عَظيمَvast البَحرِthe sea فيin خَطرٍperil
لِلَثمِto kiss أَذيالِكyour robe-hems الغُرِّradiant المَحاميدِpraiseworthy
And we sailed the vast sea in peril,
And we embarked upon the great sea fraught with danger
to kiss your radiant, praiseworthy robe-hems.
To kiss the hems of your noble, glorious garments.
وَعاقَناand hindered us عائِقٌan obstacle فيin البحرِthe sea أَذكَرَناreminded us
بِهَولِهِby its terror هَوْلَthe terror of أَيّامِthe days of الشتاwinter السودِdark
And an obstacle hindered us at sea, reminding us
But an obstacle in the sea reminded us
by its terror of the terror of winter’s dark days.
Of the horror of the dark, wintry days.
وَقَدand indeed أَتَيناwe arrived بِهذاin this الشَّهرِmonth أَوّلهat its beginning
وَقَدand indeed خَجِلناwe felt abashed حَياءًwith shame غَيرَnot مَحدودِlimited
And we arrived at the beginning of this month,
And we came at the start of this month, utterly
and we felt abashed with boundless shame.
Ashamed of our endless shortcoming.
حَتّىeven الهِلالthe crescent جَديداًnew قَدindeed أَشارَsignaled لَناto us
بِأَنّthat سَعدَكَyour good fortune مَحظوظٌfavored بِتَجديدِwith renewal
Even the new crescent has signaled to us
Until the new crescent moon signaled to us
that your good fortune is blessed with renewal.
That your good fortune is renewed with each cycle.
فَنَرتَجيso we hope for العَفوَpardon ياO مَنyou who أَنتَyou مَعدَنُهُits source
وَالعَفوُand pardon مِنamong خَيرِthe finest خُلقٍqualities فيكin you مَحمودِpraised
So we hope for pardon, O you who are its source,
So we hope for pardon, O you whose essence
and pardon is among the finest qualities praised in you.
Is pardon, the most praised trait of your virtuous character.
