إنَّ الحمارَ حِمارٌ لَستُ أَمدَحُهُ

إنَّ الحمارَ حِمارٌ لَستُ أَمدَحُهُ

وَلا أُشَبِّهه الدّهرَ بِالفرسِ

وَلا أُشَبِّهه الدّهرَ بِالفرسِ

Indeed, the donkey is a donkey; I do not praise it.

A donkey is a donkey, I do not praise him,

Nor do I ever liken it to a horse.

Nor do I liken him to a horse throughout time.

مَن قالَ إِنَّ حِماراً قَد حَكى فَرَساً

مَن قالَ إِنَّ حِماراً قَد حَكى فَرَساً

فَقُل لَهُ صَهْ فَهذا غايَةُ الهَوسِ

فَقُل لَهُ صَهْ فَهذا غايَةُ الهَوسِ

Whoever says that a donkey has resembled a horse,

Whoever says a donkey behaved like a horse,

Then say to him, 'Hush! For this is the height of madness.'

Tell him: Hush! That is the height of delusion.
