What you have done is not hidden from us.

Your misdeeds against us are not hidden

So befriend whomever you wish to befriend.

So reconcile with whoever you wish to reconcile

عرفنا أمركم صدقاً يقينا

عرفنا أمركم صدقاً يقينا

بلا شك لدينا واختلاف

بلا شك لدينا واختلاف

We know your conduct, truly and with certainty,

We truly know your affairs

With no doubt or disagreement among us.

Without doubt or disagreement

ألفتم بالهوى من ليس كفواً

ألفتم بالهوى من ليس كفواً

وقلتم نحن أربابُ العفاف

وقلتم نحن أربابُ العفاف

You grew attached in love to one who is no worthy match,

You have befriended those unworthy

And you said, "We are masters of chastity."

And claimed to be virtuous

أهل يخفى صحيح الضرب يوماً

أهل يخفى صحيح الضرب يوماً

على الصراف من نحسي مزاف

على الصراف من نحسي مزاف

Can a genuinely minted coin ever be hidden

A people whose true nature on the day of reckoning

From the money changer among counterfeit copper?

Cannot be concealed from the wise

كفاني ما سمعت من القضايا

كفاني ما سمعت من القضايا

وقولي قبل في بعض القوافي

وقولي قبل في بعض القوافي

What I have heard of these matters suffices me,

What I have heard of this matter suffices me

And what I said before in some verses:

And let me say this in some verses

إذا بان الجفا لك من خليل

إذا بان الجفا لك من خليل

فعج عنه سريعاً للتجافي

فعج عنه سريعاً للتجافي

If a friend's coldness becomes clear to you,

When your close friend shows you his estrangement

Then turn swiftly away from him, keeping your distance.

Then turn away from him quickly to avoid him

ولا تبقى شقياً في هواه

ولا تبقى شقياً في هواه

وترمي النفس في حفر التلافي

وترمي النفس في حفر التلافي

And do not remain wretched in your love for him,

Do not remain miserable loving him

Nor cast your soul into pits of ruin.

And destroy yourself in pits of misery

ستلقى عن خليلك ألف خل

ستلقى عن خليلك ألف خل

ودود قلبه صافٍ مصافى

ودود قلبه صافٍ مصافى

You will find a thousand friends in place of your friend,

You will find a thousand other friends

Each affectionate, with a heart pure and sincere.

Whose hearts are pure and reconciled

خليل ليس يكفيه خليلُ

خليل ليس يكفيه خليلُ

ولا ألف من الخلان كافي

ولا ألف من الخلان كافي

A friend for whom one friend is not enough,

One friend is not enough for a friend

And for whom a thousand companions do not suffice—

Nor a thousand friends sufficient

تجنب وده واترك هواه

تجنب وده واترك هواه

وصاف من تريد بأن تصافي

وصاف من تريد بأن تصافي

Shun his affection and forsake your love for him,

Avoid his love and leave your passion

And befriend whomever you wish to befriend.

And reconcile with whoever you wish to reconcile
