وماand not يصلreaches العلىthe heights إلاexcept الشجاعthe brave
وما يصل العلى إلا الشجاع
Natural dispositions do not stray from accustomed ways.
Habits do not foretell nature
And none reaches the heights except the brave.
And nothing reaches the heights except the brave

بخشية باسه تحمى البقاع
And fair women love none but a noble-hearted man,
And nothing is craved by the beautiful women except a gallant man
Through fear of whose might the lands are protected.
With a sword that makes the lands glow in awe

He held aloof from her love for lofty aims;
It prevents the sublime from its desires
And how could he obey it, when he is the one obeyed?
And how can it obey while it reigns supreme

فملهاه الأسنة واليراع
When an idle man dallies with a fair maiden,
When it toys with the cheeks in tranquility
His diversion, instead, is spearheads and the reed pen.
Its amusement becomes the tongues and the wrists

The sword's clang is more stirring than music,
The clinking of the sword is more delightful than hearing
And the sword's command is obeyed most swiftly.
And the command of the sword is the fastest to be obeyed
