إنindeed الزمانtime الذيwhich كناwe used to نحاذرهdread it
إن الزمان الذي كنا نحاذره
قدindeed ابتلاناafflicted us فلمso did not يبقيspare ولمand did not يذرleave
قد ابتلانا فلم يبقي ولم يذر
Indeed, the time we used to dread
The time we feared has afflicted us
Has afflicted us, sparing nothing and leaving nothing.
It left nothing of us and let nothing remain
أفتىdecreed بتفريقناfor our separation منfrom بعدafter ألفتناour closeness
أفتى بتفريقنا من بعد ألفتنا
وشجand mingled صافيpure الهناjoy والأنسand companionship بالكدرwith sorrow
وشج صافي الهنا والأنس بالكدر
It decreed our separation after we had been close,
It has decreed our separation after our intimacy
And mingled pure joy and companionship with sorrow.
And troubled the purity of our joy and companionship with bitterness
لمdid not يرقبheed اللهGod فيناconcerning us إذwhen ألمdescended بناupon us
لم يرقب الله فينا إذ ألم بنا
ولمand did not يحاذرfear جزاءretribution البغيoppression والضررand harm
ولم يحاذر جزاء البغي والضرر
It showed no regard for God in dealing with us when it descended upon us,
It did not spare us when it inflicted pain on us
Nor did it fear retribution for oppression and harm.
Nor did it beware the recompense of wrongdoing and harm
