    In love, he has borne what cannot be endured—

    a sorrowful soul whose heart separation has shattered.

    اليم للحشى منه احتراق

    And kindled within the ribs a fire of passion;

    from it comes a burning that pains the heart.

    So my body and emaciation are in harmony,

    and my heart and consolation are estranged.

    My sorrows, among my cares, are not hidden,

    nor my passion, my wasting sickness, and my longing.

    When a ring-necked dove laments just before dawn,

    then my tears race down my cheeks.

    Does a dove weep for its mate before dawn,

    while I do not weep? Then my love is a sham.

    فلومك والهوى عندي شقاق

    So leave me to my melancholy, O my reproacher;

    for your reproach and love are, to me, at odds.
