إنif نكنwe are ياO حبيبbeloved بالرغمagainst our will غبناwe were absent
عنكfrom you واللهand by God فيin هوىlove ماnot رغبناwe desired
If, beloved, we have been absent against our will
Though we're apart, my love, and I'm in pain
from you—by God, we have desired no other love.
I've not desired another, this I swear
كمhow often رأيناكwe saw you حاضراًpresent حينwhen غبناwe were absent
نحنwe قومa people نرىwe deem فراقكparting from you غبناa loss
How often we saw you present when we were absent!
How often when we're parted, I see you plain
We are a people who deem parting from you a loss,
For your absence gives me only despair
ونرىand we deem القربnearness منكto you حتماًa necessity وفرضاand a duty
.
.
and deem nearness to you a necessity and a duty.
Your presence is a duty I must bear
.
I'll keep my word, though we're no longer one
ومحيّاكand by your countenance ماnot عنfrom العهدthe pledge حلناwe strayed
وعرىand the bonds الصبرof patience مذsince نأيتyou went far away حللناwe loosened
And by your countenance, we have not strayed from the pledge;
Since you left, patience is hopelessly gone
and since you went far away, we have loosened the bonds of patience.
I'm yours to command, your will be done
وكماand just as شاءهwilled it هواكyour desire افتعلناwe acted
أنتyou إنif كنتyou were قدindeed غضبتyou grew angry جعلناwe made
And just as your desire willed it, we have acted.
Please forgive, though angry you have been
If you have indeed grown angry, we have made
I bow before you, let your anger end
لكfor you حرthe noblest part الوجوهof the faces أرضاًground لترضىso that you may be pleased
the noblest part of our faces ground for you, so that you may be pleased.
