His tears tell you what his heart conceals.

Go easy, for reproach does him no good.

For God's sake, leave him sorrowful and anguished in love.

If you feel no pity for him, beware of causing him anguish.

Let him endure sorrow in loving one who grows weary.

Perhaps, if he laments abandonment, his beloved will hear him.

Do you not see how his mind is disordered because of him,

ever since he became infatuated with the dusky gazelle-fawn?

By God, a sorrowing lover spent the night dejected,

still moaning for him, while you hold out hope of union.

May he not live—if he forgets him without anguish—

for an age; nor may his pasture be sweet throughout his days.

What solace is there for one

in love with someone who now terrifies him with death?

Never can a youth imprinted with love cease to pine

for a full moon whose rising is on the heart's horizon.
