Our beloveds, if only you knew our plight,

You would be certain we have kept our pledge, unchanged.

And had you received a share of love like ours,

Pleasures would not have distracted you from us.

You turned from us to keep company with others,

Yet we took no substitute for you, nor another intimate companion.

We tended your love, as faithfulness requires,

But you made your estrangement plain; we were not like this before.

And you swore not to betray our pledges,

Even if you went away, or we had parted from you.

To your justice we bring our complaint of what you have done to us:

For, by the life of love, you broke faith, but we did not.

You acted treacherously, but we did not; you betrayed, but we will not.

And sweet slumber delighted you, while we did not sleep.

Your passions swept you toward others than us,

And you forsook the old pledge, but we did not change.

And you spoke, but did not stay true to your words.

What would it have cost you to keep faith? Yet we—

By the life of love—deserve no coldness from you,

While we remain true to the words we spoke.
