وقدand indeed زعمواthey claimed أنthat النوىseparation لذويfor those afflicted with الجوىlove's anguish
وقد زعموا أن النوى لذوي الجوى
طبيبa physician إذاwhen عزproved elusive الوصالunion منfrom الحبthe beloved
طبيب إذا عز الوصال من الحب
They have indeed claimed that separation, for the lovesick,
Is a physician when union with the beloved proves elusive.
فلماyet when نأيناwe parted زادناit gave us more فوقbeyond ماwhat بناailed us
فلما نأينا زادنا فوق ما بنا
منof الوجدlonging والأشجانand sorrows والغمand grief والكربand anguish
من الوجد والأشجان والغم والكرب
Yet when we parted, it added to what we already bore
Of longing, sorrows, grief, and anguish.
وصحand it became clear لديناto us أنthat ذاthis الزعمthe claim باطلfalse
وصح لدينا أن ذا الزعم باطل
لأناbecause we وجدناهwe found it علىin addition to ماwhat بناailed us يربيit adds more
لأنا وجدناه على ما بنا يربي
And it became clear to us that this claim is false,
For we found it adding to what already ailed us.
