Do not weep for Tunis, O Yasin, or Fadsa,
Do not weep, oh Tunis, or Fes or Tripoli
nor for Tripoli when calamity befell it.
Though calamity has befallen them all

Fire has blazed, and these homelands of ours have burned.
Fires have ignited and burnt are our homelands
Terror has immobilized us, as have desire and despair.
Terror has stilled us, desire and despair

When we unite and become one Arab nation,
When we unite and become one Arab nation
Jassas will carry out whatever our Zayd decrees.
No harm by Zayd can match harm by Jassas

My voice and that of the reformers have grown hoarse together,
My voice has cried out, and reformers' together
yet we have received no answer, as though the people were graves.
Yet no response came, as if all were deaf

Stand by the graves and call to those who dwell in them,
Stand by the graves and call those resting in them
for the dead may have feeling.
For the dead may have more sense than the living

Truth is that whose letters are inscribed with the sword;
Truth is not written by the sword or blood
its ink is blood, and necks are its paper.
Its ink is lives and its paper, severed necks

Leave talk aside and draw the keen sword, if
Leave talk, draw the sword if you wish
you wish to survive; let no misgiving assail you.
To survive and heed no doubts or fear

The wolf attacks only when the flock is left untended.
The wolf attacks only when sheep are negligent
Who, then, will guard it today, O Ibn Wadi?
Who guards them today, O Ibn Wadi, who guards?

The sons of the Arabs have strayed from the path of guidance, and now
The Arabs have lost the path of guidance
the unclean and vile subject them to humiliation.
And Ruin now feasts on filth and disgrace
