يا أيها العالم النحرير أفتي لنا
هلis it? فيin الهوىlove جائزpermissible أنthat تتلفperish المهجsouls
هل في الهوى جائز أن تتلف المهج
O erudite scholar, give us your ruling:
O free world, answer me
Is it permissible for souls to perish in love,
Is it justified in love for hearts to perish
أمor لاnot افدناenlighten us جزاكmay He reward you اللهGod صالحةa good reward
أم لا افدنا جزاك الله صالحة
فنارfor the fire وجديmy yearning لهاit has فيin مهجتيmy soul وهجa blaze
فنار وجدي لها في مهجتي وهج
Or not? Enlighten us—may God reward you well.
Or not, reward you God with goodness
For the fire of my yearning blazes within my soul.
For the fire of my love has a blaze in my heart
