The dove lamented, increasing my bewilderment.

Does it lament sorrowfully like me, though it is innocent?

I fancy that my grieving stirred it.

O dove above the arak tree, tell me:

    .

I adjure you by the One who made you weep—what made you weep?

    .

Did you pity me, or are you, like me, consumed by passion?

Or are you remembering a beloved who has gone far away?

Or has your longing, O dove, grown for al-Liwā?

As for me, I wept from love’s pain,

and from parting with the one I love—are you the same?
