ولوand if كنتyou were مثليlike me فيin الغرامpassionate love متيماenslaved by love
لكنتyou would be لحاليfor my plight فيin المحبةlove ترحمyou show pity
And if you were, like me, enslaved by love,
If you were like me, enamoured and afflicted,
you would have pity on my plight in love.
You would have mercy on me in my love.
فكمfor how often قدindeed شكوتI complained الهمsorrow والوجدand yearning والهوىand love
اليكto you فلمyet did not تفهمyou understand كأنas though ليسnot تفهمyou understand
How often I have complained of sorrow, yearning, and love
How much have I complained to you of anxiety, passion and desire!
to you, yet you did not understand, as though you do not understand.
Yet you did not understand me, as if you do not understand.
أحقis it right إذاwhen أشكوI lament الجوىlove’s anguish لاnot تجيبنيyou answer me
وتهجرنيand you forsake me ظلماًunjustly وماthough not أناI مجرمa wrongdoer
Is it right that, when I lament love’s anguish, you do not answer me,
Is it right that when I complain of my love pangs, you do not answer me,
and forsake me unjustly, though I have done no wrong?
And unjustly abandon me, when I have committed no crime?
