Are you abiding by the covenant of love,
Are you still faithful to the pact of love,
or have you forgotten that covenant and broken it?
Or have you become forgetful and broken that pact?

Or have you chosen an intimate other than us, after our parting,
Or have you chosen another in place of me after what was between us,
for your affection—or have events changed you?
Whether out of your own desire or because fate has changed you?

Do you deny the sweetness of union to one earnest in love,
Do you truly prevent the sweetness of reunion in love,
and grant it to one who claims love while merely toying?
And grant it to one who pretends while he is fooling around?

By my life, this is the worst innovation in love,
By my life, this is an evil innovation in love,
and those who introduce it are wicked people.
And those who originated it in love are wicked people.

O steadfast innovator in love, for I
Or are you, though steadfast in love, an innovator in it?
have come to you with knowledge, to debate this.
For I have come to you knowingly searching for this.

Is it from the books of the two Testaments and Ahmad's law
Is it from the two pacts and the law of Ahmad,
that you have found delay concerning this—or is something within you? [Wording unclear.]
That you have delayed, or is there something rousing you?
إلىto اللهGod كمhow much يهوىloves الصدودturning away معذبيmy tormentor

To God I complain—how my tormentor loves to turn away!
By Allah, how the one who turns away is tortured in his love,
Yet I abide by the covenant, beyond doubt.
And I, without any doubt, still keep to the pact.
