My night has grown long, and my misgivings have assailed me,

Because of a visitor who brought empty nonsense.

Jarir came to us when troubles were many,

With that which entails the cutting off of noses.

I contend with him, the sword between us,

And I do not wear the garments of the ignoble.

If Syria is granted Yemeni allegiance,

Which its elders have described to one another in assemblies,

Then, if they agree, I shall assail Ali with a battle line

That crushes everything, moist and dry, in its assault on him.

And I surely hope for the best that anyone has gained,

Nor do I despair of dominion over Iraq.

And if they do not meet my expectations in their deliberations,

And if they disappoint my expectations, I shall hold back, scowling.
