God bless Ziyad—what a man he would be,

if only he knew what to do and what to leave undone!

You forget your father, though his words proved true,

when you addressed the people, with Umar as our ruler.

    إنّ ابنَ حَرْبٍ لَهُ في قَوْمِهِ خَطُرُ

    So boast of your immediate father and of ours;

indeed, the son of Harb has high standing among his people.

Indeed, your grasping at a people with whom you share no lineage,

counting on your fingers, is a disgrace that cannot be forgiven.

So dwell far away, for God has kept them far

from the excellence by which Mudar rises above humankind.

For judgment is newly acquired, and wisdom is experience,

in which its possessor finds the way to water and back.
