Convey a message to Abu Ayyub there with you:

that we and your people are like the wolf and the short-legged sheep.

If indeed you have killed the Commander of the Faithful, then do not

hope for leniency from me to the end of time.

Indeed, the one you struck down, wronging him—

the burning grief for him has left a fissure upon my liver.

Indeed, I have sworn an oath that is not false:

you have indeed killed an imam free of crookedness.

Do not think I shall forget the calamity that befell him,

while even one of the Ansar remains in the lands.

How grievous to me is a deed you will never accomplish!

And strive against us, for we are not the land’s forsaken egg.

God has replaced you with the finest of Dhu Kalaʿ

and the Yaḥṣubites, people of truth in al-Janad.

Indeed, Iraq to us is a truffle on an open plain,

or a lump of fat a roaster snatched with scarcely an effort.

And the righteous dwell in al-Sham; its land

is safe, and its heartland is the lion’s lair.
