News has reached me of a matter that brings the people anguish,

And with it comes long weeping for the eyes.

And with it comes all-encompassing ruin and disgrace,

And with it comes a lasting severing of noses.

The loss of the Commander of the Faithful, and a mighty crash,

At which the solid mountains almost shift.

To God belong the eyes of one who has seen the like of a fallen man,

Struck down without guilt—and that is a grave matter.

A band rallied against him in Medina,

Two factions within it: killers and those who forsook him.

He called them, but they turned deaf to him when it came to answering,

And that is a sign of what lies within their souls.

    I regret having followed desire,

And my neglect; in it lie regret and wailing.

I shall lament Abu Amr with every straightened spear,

And gleaming swords that clang among the mail-clad men.

I left you to the people who were themselves

Your torment; what can I say after that?

So I shall not remain, as long as I live, in a town,

Dragging my robe’s hem there while you lie slain.

So no sleep until the horses are transfixed with lances,

And the thirst for vengeance on those misguided men is quenched.

And we grind them as a millstone grinds over its leather mat,

And that is little beside what they dealt you.

As for that in which there is affection between us,

There is no path to it as long as you live.

I shall make it pregnant with war, battle-seasoned and relentless,

And I am surely its guarantor, from this year of ours onward.
