دعوتُI called ابنَson of عَبّاسٍAbbas إلىto حَدّthe decisive point of خُطَّةٍa matter
وكانَand he was امرأًa man أُهْدِيI send إليهto him رَسَائليmy letters
I called Ibn Abbas to the crux of a matter,
and he was a man to whom I would send my letters.
فَأخْلَفَso he disappointed ظَنّيmy expectations والحوادثُand misfortunes جَمّةٌmany
ولمand not يَكُhe was فيماin what قالhe said منّيwith me بواصِلِmaintaining ties
Then he disappointed my expectations, and misfortunes are many;
nor, in what he said, did he maintain ties with me.
وماand not كانwas فيماin what جاءcame ماwhat يستحقّهُhe deserves it
ومَاand not زادhe did more أنْthan أَغْلَىhe made boil عليهagainst him مَراجليmy cauldrons
And in what he brought there was nothing he deserved;
and he did no more than set my cauldrons boiling against him.
فقلْso tell لابنto the son of عبّاسٍAbbas تُراكَdo you think yourself مُفَرّقاًscattering
بقولكwith your words مَنْthose who حَوليaround me وأنّكَand that you آكليdevouring me
So tell Ibn Abbas: Do you think you can scatter
those around me with your words, and devour me?
وقلand tell لابنto the son of عباسٍAbbas تُراكَdo you think yourself مُخَوّفاًintimidating
بجهلكَwith your folly حِلْميmy forbearance إنّنيindeed I غيرُnot غافلِheedless
And tell Ibn Abbas: Do you think you can intimidate
my forbearance with your folly? I am not heedless.
فَأَبْرقْso flash lightning وأَرعِدْand thunder ماas much as استطعتَyou can فإِنّنيfor indeed I
إليكَtoward you بماwith whatever يشجيكgrieves you سَبْطُsupple الأَناملِthe fingers
So flash your lightning and thunder all you can, for I
am open-handed toward you with whatever grieves you.
