إذاwhen أناI أَعطيتُI gave القليلَa little شكوتُمُyou complained
وإنْand if أناI أعطيتُI gave الكثيرَmuch فَلاthen no شُكْرُgratitude
When I give a little, you complain;
And if I give much, there is no gratitude.
ومَاand not لمْتُI blamed نَفْسيmyself فيin قضَاءfulfilling حقوقكمْyour rights
وقَدand indeed كانَthere was ليfor me فيماin what اعتذرتُI offered an excuse بهwith it عُذْرُa justification
And I have not reproached myself in fulfilling your rights,
And I had grounds for the excuse I offered.
وأَمْنَحُكُمْand I grant you ماليmy wealth وتُكْفَرُand is met with ingratitude نِعْمَتيmy bounty
وتَشْتُمُand reviles عِرْضيmy honor فيin مجالسهاits gatherings فِهْرُFihr
And I grant you my wealth, yet my bounty is met with ingratitude;
And Fihr reviles my honor in its gatherings.

وضَاقتْand grew constricted قلوبٌhearts منهُمُamong them حَشْوُهاtheir contents الغِمْرُrancor
If the excuse is not accepted and sorrow does no good,
And hearts among them have grown constricted, filled with rancor,
فكيفَhow then أُداوِيI treat داءَكُمْyour disease ودَواؤُكمْand your remedy

How, then, can I treat your disease, when your remedy
Increases your waywardness? The matter has indeed grown grave.
سَأَحْرِمُكُمْI shall deprive you حَتّىuntil يَذِلّare humbled صِعَابُكمْyour unruly ones
وأَبْلَغُand the most effective شَيْءٍthing فيin صَلاَحِكُمُyour reform الفَقْرُpoverty
I shall deprive you until your unruly ones are humbled;
And poverty is the most effective means of setting you right.
