نَفَىbanished النّومُsleep ماwhat لاnot تَبْتَغِيهِdesire it الأَضالعُthe ribs
وكلُّand every امرىءٍman يوماًone day إلىto الصّدقِtruth راجعُreturning
What the ribs do not desire has banished sleep.
Sleep dispelled what the ribs do not seek,
And every man will one day return to truth.
And every man one day returns to honesty.
فياso, O عمروAmr قدindeed لاحَتْappeared عيونٌeyes كثيرةٌmany
فياso, oh ليتَif only شِعْرِيmy knowledge عمرُوAmr ماwhat أنتyou صانعُdoing
So, O Amr, many eyes have appeared.
So O Amr many eyes have appeared,
So, would that I knew, Amr, what you will do!
And oh how I wish I knew, O Amr, what you will do.
وياand, oh ليتَif only شعريmy knowledge عَنْabout حديثٍa matter ضَمِنْتَهُyou guaranteed it
أتحملهwill you bear it? ياO عمروAmr ماnot أنتyou ضالِعُlame
And would that I knew about a matter you pledged to fulfill:
And oh how I wish I knew about a conversation you implied,
Will you bear it, Amr? You are not lame.
Will you undertake it, O Amr, are you capable?
وقالand said رجالٌmen إنّthat عمراًAmr يُريدُهاhe desires it
فقلتso I said لهمto them عمروٌAmr ليَto me اليومَtoday تابعُa follower
And men said that Amr desires it.
And men said that Amr wants her,
So I told them, "Amr is my follower today."
So I said to them, “Amr today will follow me.”
فإنْfor if تَكُyou are قدalready أبطأْتَyou have delayed عنّيfrom me تبادَرَتْrushed forward

إليكَtoward you بِتَحْقِيقِwith confirmation of الظّنونِthe suspicions الأَصابعُthe fingers
For if you have been slow to join me, there have rushed
If you have been delayed from me, fingers
Toward you the fingers, confirming suspicions.
Will hasten to confirm suspicions about you.
فإنّيfor indeed I وربّby the Lord of الراقصاتِthe dancing camels عَشِيّةًat evening
خَوَاضِعَbowing بالرُّكبانِwith the riders والنّقْعُand the dust ساطِعُrising
For I—by the Lord of the camels dancing at evening,
By the Lord of the dancing girls at night,
Bowing beneath their riders while the dust rises—
With submission in the traveling company and clear hoofbeats.
بكَin you اليومَtoday فيin عَقْدِconcluding the pact of الخلافةِthe caliphate واثقٌconfident
ومنand from دونbefore ماwhat ظنّواthey suspected بهof him السُّمُّthe poison ناقِعُdeadly
Am confident in you today in sealing the caliphate's pact.
Today I am confident in your leadership,
And before what they suspect of him lies deadly poison.
And what they suspected would befall is repelled.
فَاسرعso hasten بهاwith it أوor أبطِdelay فيin غيرِabsence of رِيبَةٍsuspicion
ولاand do not تَعْدُoverstep فالأمرfor the matter الذيthat حُمّwas decreed واقِعُcoming to pass
So hasten with it, or delay, without raising suspicion;
So hurry to her, or stay without suspicion,
And do not overstep, for what is decreed will come to pass.
And do not repeat, for what is decided will happen.
