You have forbidden us sleep, O night.

Have separation and love’s anguish not been enough?

Wait—let me pour out my anguish, and stand still.

Let no tale-bearers carry word of us.

And control the path to dawn; for the people, if

Doves lament, will take me for the doves.

O night, I bear my sorrow and humankind’s injustice,

And you, and separation—all are darkness.

I see you as a grave for lovers; is there

Anything left of lovers within you but bones?

Have mercy, O night, and have mercy on me!

And a thousand times, have mercy—and let me sleep.

Perhaps her apparition will visit my bed,

And today she may grant me even a greeting.

Alas for the sickness of love! And love,

If I cry ‘Alas!’, increases my sickness.
