Whose is the command but His—glory be to Him?

Do you think a man can judge his Judge?

While God's decree has run its course.

So the earth seems a racecourse,

    Its steeds kicking its riders.

If a horseman summons a rival to death,

Death outruns his rivals in reaching him.

A sphere of revolving events, while people

Mistake its turning for a standstill.

It has traded souls for souls upon the earth,

And so Death has set up its scales.

    ض أرتنا أثوابهُ أكفانهْ

    Many a man in finery struts upon the earth;

His robes have shown us his shrouds.

And when the garden brings forth

Flowers, the wind makes their garden their grave.

The earth is only a prison for the son of Adam,

And I see Death there as his jailer.

So it is ignorance to escort in sorrow

A prisoner whose sorrows have been relieved.

So be calm, Ahmad, for that is a path

Where every living soul will meet his brothers.

Do you not see the star shining at dawn,

How morning unleashed its flood upon it?

Is a pearl returned, once held in trust.

God fashioned it like the breeze, so no wonder

If the breeze has settled in His gardens.

    وأحسن رضا تنل إحسانهْ

    So all command is His who has ordered all affairs;

And accept with grace; you will gain His kindness.

Indeed, souls' discontent is ingratitude for the bounty

Of God; so let a man guard his faith.
