تعاتبنا كأنَّ القل

تعاتبنا كأنَّ القل

بَ عندَ القلبِ في شكِّ

بَ عندَ القلبِ في شكِّ

We reproached each other, as though one heart

You reproach me as if the heart

were held in doubt by the other.

Is with the heart in doubt

وألسننا صوامتُ وال

وألسننا صوامتُ وال

عيونُ لبعضها تحكي

عيونُ لبعضها تحكي

And our tongues were silent, while the

And our tongues are silent, and the

eyes spoke to one another.

Eyes to each other speak

فقالتْ أنتَ كالأطفا

فقالتْ أنتَ كالأطفا

لِ خلو القلبِ من شركِ

لِ خلو القلبِ من شركِ

Then she said, “You are like children,

She said, you are like children

your heart free of guile.”

Empty heart of partnership

ففاضَ بمدحها دمعي

ففاضَ بمدحها دمعي

ونطقُ الطفلِ أن يبكي

ونطقُ الطفلِ أن يبكي

So at her praise my tears overflowed,

So my tears overflowed with her praise

and a child's speech is to weep.

And the child's speech is to cry
