سنَّ الزمانُ شريعةَ البؤ

سنَّ الزمانُ شريعةَ البؤ

سِ فدانَ الخلقَ اجمعْ

سِ فدانَ الخلقَ اجمعْ

Time ordained the law of misery,

Time has set the rule of separation

and made all creation submit.

So the people are all divided

لكنني مع من أحبُّ خر

لكنني مع من أحبُّ خر

جتُ عما باتَ يشرعْ

جتُ عما باتَ يشرعْ

But I, with the one I love, departed

But I disobeyed what has been laid down

from what it had come to decree.

For I am with those I love

وقضيتُ أياماً رأيتُ الش

وقضيتُ أياماً رأيتُ الش

ملَ فيها كيفَ يجمعْ

ملَ فيها كيفَ يجمعْ

And I spent days in which I saw

And I spent days observing how

how reunion came about.

Affliction gathers the people

وعرفتُ لذاتِ الوصا

وعرفتُ لذاتِ الوصا

لِ وعرفتُ كيفَ أن الحبُّ يصرعْ

لِ وعرفتُ كيفَ أن الحبُّ يصرعْ

And I knew the pleasures of union,

And I learned the joys of true devotion

and learned how love strikes one down.

And how love can conquer and defeat

فتنبهَ الدهرُ الخؤو

فتنبهَ الدهرُ الخؤو

نُ وغاظهُ ما كنتُ أصنعْ

نُ وغاظهُ ما كنتُ أصنعْ

Then treacherous Time awoke,

So time awoke in anger

and what I was doing enraged it.

Annoyed by what I was doing

وقضى علينا ثمَّ شت

وقضى علينا ثمَّ شت

تَ ذلكَ الوصلَ وقطَّعْ

تَ ذلكَ الوصلَ وقطَّعْ

And it passed judgment against us, then broke

And it ended that companionship

that union apart and severed it.

And severed the ties that bound us

وأشدَّ ما يلقى الفتى

وأشدَّ ما يلقى الفتى

إذا كانَ بعدَ العزِّ يخضعْ

إذا كانَ بعدَ العزِّ يخضعْ

And the harshest thing a young man faces

And what hurts a young man most

is to bow in submission after glory.

Is to bow in humility after glory
