أرقنيkept me sleepless ياO حمامُdove ذاthis الكمدِgrief
فهلso, have...? وجدْتَyou felt الهوىlove كماas أجدُI feel
This grief has kept me sleepless, O dove.
The dove's cooing deprived me of sleep
Have you, then, felt love as I feel it?
Did you find passion like I do?
بتُّI spent the night علىon الغصنِthe bough نائحاًwailing غرِداًsinging melodiously
وبتُّand I spent the night أبكيI weep for الذينَthose who قدْalready بعدواwent far away
I spent the night on the bough, wailing and singing,
I spend the night lamenting on the branch, chirping,
And I spent the night weeping for those who have gone far away.
I spend the night weeping for those who are far away
وأعينيand my eyes ماnot تزالُcease واكفةًshedding tears
وأضلعيand my ribs ماnot تزالُcease تتقدُblaze
And my eyes still stream with tears,
My eyes still shed tears
And my ribs still blaze.
And my ribs are still aflame

طارَflew away بنوميwith my sleep ونومكَand your sleep السهدُsleeplessness
Indeed, we are both lovers, sick with longing;
We are both passionate lovers
Sleeplessness has flown off with my sleep and yours.
Insomnia took away both my sleep and yours

تذوبُmelts ياO باعثَstirrer of الجوىlove's anguish كبدُa liver
So draw aside gently; apart from my liver,
So coo slowly, for nothing but my liver
No liver melts, O stirrer of love's anguish.
Melts away, O rouser of passions, my liver

The body to blame for loving its soul?
Blamed for the body's love of the soul?

In his beauty the gazelles are exalted, while
The gazelles glory in his beauty, and
In the kingdom of his beauty, the lion has been humbled.
The lion has been subdued by the power of his beauty

Halt at his dwelling, you two, and ask him:
Stand at his abode and ask him
Is anything less than the promise he makes?
Does he fulfill the promise he makes?

أقفرَhas grown desolate بعدَafter الأحبةِthe loved ones البلدُthe land
And sing, you two, if you see a ruined dwelling:
And sing, if you see the places of the loved ones
The land has grown desolate since the loved ones departed.
Desolated after the loved ones left the country
