قالواthey said جفتكshe shunned you ولاand not تنفكُّyou cease تذكرهاyou remember her
قالوا جفتك ولا تنفكُّ تذكرها
إنindeed النصيحةَthe counsel سلوانٌsolace بسلوانِwith solace
إن النصيحةَ سلوانٌ بسلوانِ
They said, “She has shunned you, yet you never cease remembering her.
They said, "Forget her though you can't help but remember her,
Indeed, counsel is solace upon solace.”
For advice is soothing to one in torment."
فقلتُso I said عينيَmy eye منيpart of me وهْيَand it إنْif رمدتْit became inflamed
فقلتُ عينيَ مني وهْيَ إنْ رمدتْ
فلاthen not يكونُis دواهاits remedy كحلُkohl عميانِblind people
فلا يكونُ دواها كحلُ عميانِ
So I said, “My eye is part of me, and if it becomes inflamed,
But I said, "My eyes belong to me yet if they grow bleary,
then its cure cannot be the kohl of the blind.
The cure won't be an ointment for the blind."
نأَتْshe withdrew دنَتْshe drew near وصلَتْshe maintained ties ضمتْshe embraced نفتْshe banished هجرتْshe forsook
نأَتْ دنَتْ وصلَتْ ضمتْ نفتْ هجرتْ
فيin كلِّall ذلكthat أهواهاI love her وتهوانيand she loves me
في كلِّ ذلك أهواها وتهواني
She withdrew, drew near, joined me, embraced me, banished me, forsook me—
She drew near, united, embraced, turned away, abandoned,
through all of that, I love her and she loves me.”
Through all that I adored her and she possessed me.
