حجبوهُ عن عيني فباتتْ صبةٌ
كيلاso that it would not ترىsee فيin النومِsleep طيفَthe phantom خيالهِof his image
كيلا ترى في النومِ طيفَ خيالهِ
They hid him from my eye, so it spent the night lovesick,
They hid him from my eyes, so my eyelids became sleepless,
lest it see in sleep the phantom of his image.
Lest they see his phantom image in dreams,
وبقيتُAnd I remained يعذلنيreproaches me المنامُsleep بصدِّهِby its shunning
وبقيتُ يعذلني المنامُ بصدِّهِ
ويسومنيand oppresses me التبريحُtorment فيin إذلالهِits humbling
ويسومني التبريحُ في إذلالهِ
And I remained, while sleep reproached me by shunning me,
And I remained; dreams torment me by repelling him,
and torment oppressed me as it humbled me.
And wakefulness afflicts me by humiliating me in his absence,
ياO رحمتاpity للصبِّfor the lovesick man فيماin what نابهُbefell him
يا رحمتا للصبِّ فيما نابهُ
حتىEven كرىslumber جفنيهِof his two eyelids منamong عذالِهِhis reproachers
حتى كرى جفنيهِ من عذالِهِ
O pity for the lovesick man in what has befallen him!
Oh what pity for passion in what has afflicted me!
Even the slumber of his eyelids is among his reproachers.
Until my eyelids grew weary of his torment.
