وتاللهِ يروي آكلٌ ليسَ يشبعُ
They are mankind—a living race; a tear waters the earth,
People are alive as long as the earth is watered by their tears,
and, by God, a devourer quenches its thirst but is never sated.
By God, the glutton drinks but is never satisfied,

ظُماءَةُ جوفٍ أجَّ شوقاً إلى الورى
وبعضَand some الظماthirst قدmay يلتظيflare حينَwhen ينقعُis quenched
وبعضَ الظما قد يلتظي حينَ ينقعُ
The thirst of a belly ablaze with longing for mankind;
The thirst of an empty stomach yearns for sustenance,
and some thirst may flare just when it is quenched.
And some of the thirsty may find relief when soaked.

وإنand even if بطنَconsumed الأحياءَthe living فيon الأرضِthe earth أجمعُall together
وإن بطنَ الأحياءَ في الأرضِ أجمعُ
And a hunger that creation cannot ward off,
It is an incurable disease that people cannot remedy,
even if it consumed all the living upon earth.
Though the bellies of the living on earth altogether could cure.

So, O Creator of the world, have mercy! It is only
O Maker of this world, Your mercy has always been that
through ignorance of what You ordained that mankind has transgressed.
People in ignorance have transgressed what You decreed.

Each has a heart, yet a nature
Everyone has a heart but by nature
of evil severs one heart from another.
Enmity creeps between one heart and another.

Blood has flowed in everyone, yet I
Though the same blood flows in all, I see greed
see greed as an infant suckling mankind's blood.
Suckling like an infant on people's blood.

Between hopes and the soul, evil takes its stand;
Between desire and the self there is room for evil.
if the soul does not restrain it, it comes rushing on.
If the self does not resist it, it quickly advances.

And anyone weak in judgment, swayed by desire
The weak-willed, whose passions are unrestrained,
away from resolve, is afflicted with humiliation and submits.
Are led by their weakness into submission.

By God, a man's faults lie with his family;
By God, a man's sins belong to him.
for clay takes whatever shape you stamp upon it.
Clay takes the shape into which it is molded.
وأعجبُand most astonishing ماwhat فيin الناسِpeople أنthat يتألمواthey feel pain
وأعجبُ ما في الناسِ أن يتألموا
إذاwhen أوجعتهمhurts them نكبةٌٌa calamity ثمthen يوجعواthey cause pain
إذا أوجعتهم نكبةٌٌ ثم يوجعوا
Most astonishing in people is that they feel pain
More wondrous than all is that people suffer pain
when calamity hurts them, and then hurt others;
When disaster strikes, then they inflict pain.

and that a person deceives without consideration,
That one person deceives another, no favor returned,
yet is distraught if he, in turn, is deceived.
Then grieves if he finds himself so deceived.

Among people, truth endures, and falsehood too;
Among people are rights and wrongs.
yet they have laid claim to truth through falsehood.
But they claimed wrongs were rights.

God curse an age that strengthened desire with force!
God has allowed the world to follow its whims,
Thus every strong man wills as he pleases and is obeyed.
So the strong take whatever they wish to take.

Grant that this oppression was statecraft;
Grant this oppression was a political ploy—
then who said injustice could intercede for injustice?
Who has said that oppression can justify oppression?

By your life, if statecraft built a chamber
By your life, if politics built on anything
without people's hearts, it would be left tottering.
But people's hearts, its foundations would crumble.

And if they raised it upon any but their weak,
If not raised on the backs of the weak,
they would never find it raised, even at time's end.
It would never endure till the end of time.

If the weak had no allies, then who
but the weak is brought to grief by those powers?
Would mourn them except the helpless when aggrieved?

Have mercy, O Lord of the weak! They are like
O Lord of the weak, they are to the mighty
a finger bearing a massive shackle for the feet.
As a finger weighed down by massive shackles.

Alas! What are these wars, and whom do I see?
Woe to these wars! Who do I see
For ages we have known beasts to hunger for beasts.
Once peaceful now violently dispossessed?

Disgraces! Yet how many an atrocity
I have no grievance, yet how many horrors
has a source that, if revealed to you, is more atrocious still.
Have worse sources, if you could know their roots.

They set the world aflame, some supply the fuel
are its firewood, while others cast them into it.
While others are the spark igniting unrest.

rent apart in terror at its lightning.
Whose lighting startles them till they seem to crack.

If a passage through it opens for the wind,
When the wind opens a path into them
it escapes, bearing a fever that hisses and blazes.
They are cleared, though fevers still shiver and flare.

When the sun rises they are dazed, unable to know
whether, in the dust, it is her setting or her rising.
Whether it sets in the mud or if that is its dawn.

And that old woman has lifted her veil
That aged woman has unveiled her face
and said to her people, 'Stand, then bid farewell.'
And said to her family, stop and bid farewell.

Mayhem screams, repelling with its cries
hence the mouth of Death today is called a cannon—
The mouth of death whose name today is cannon.

They passed around cups of death in the thick of battle,
They drank from death's cups in the madness of tumult,
and that is the ringing of cup struck against cup.
The clashing of cup against cup echoes back.

By God, how sweet death is after a hardship
How the mayhem craves release after confinement
that becomes a path to one still greater!
That becomes a path to wider expanses.

As death descended, they prostrated as if

Fearing punishment, kneeling in dread.

As if death's robes were a mantle bestowed
upon him, and were now being patched with souls.
Upon it, the spirits stitched into patches.

Thirsty for a trough of water from which to drink.

from the strewn corpses, beseeching God.
Of rotting corpses pleading to God.

Quakes of woe! The earth beneath them never ceases
Earthquakes and the woe of a land that shakes beneath,

Trembling until it threatens to crack.

When aid harms, what good is a blessing
that harms mankind many times as much as it helps?
That hurts the land multiple times its benefit?

Just so I see the world as an odious woman;
and if she gives birth, she brings forth something more hideous.
If she gives birth, the offspring is more vile.

To its people as long as ambition lurks among them.
