زارَvisited الخيالُthe vision فحيَّانيthen greeted me وأسندنيand supported me
يدٌa hand علىupon القلبِthe heart والأخرىand the other hand علىupon الكبدِthe liver
The vision visited me, then greeted me and held me up—
One hand upon my heart, the other upon my liver.
ومرَّand passed ليلُa night هوىًof love ماhow كانَwould have been أهنأَهُblissful it was!
لوif أننيthat I لمdid not أقمْrise منهُfrom it إلىto الأبدِeternity
And a night of love passed—how blissful it would have been
Had I never risen from it, for all eternity!
وحينَand when أيقظتُI awakened عينيmy eye فيin الصباحِthe morning بكتْit wept
وعاقبتنيَand it punished me فيin جفنيَّmy two eyelids بالرمدِwith eye inflammation
And when I awakened my eye in the morning, it wept,
And punished me with ophthalmia in both my eyelids.
