The beauties forsook me for no fault of mine,

and the beauties aided my fate against me.

Slayers of souls that God has made inviolable—

and may those souls be slain for their sake?

And they persisted in tormenting me until

my night has no morning after Layla.

O my heart, be patient, for it is but

a morning, after which comes evening.

How many people, shunned by others,

were brought together by death and so found rest!
