وحدُّand the edge حساميof my sword ماnot تُفَلُّare blunted مضاربهْits striking edges
Should I fear it—an eyelid whose cutting blades are never drawn—
I fear his eyelids that shed no tears
While my sword's striking edges are never blunted?
And my sword's edge that strikes no blows
فأينthen where يديmy hand هاتيكَthat one والسيفُand the sword فيin يديmy hand
وماand what لفؤاديwith my heart أنكرتهُhave disowned it جوانبهْits sides
Then where is that hand of mine, though the sword is in my hand?
Then where are these hands of mine? And this sword in my hand?
And what ails my heart? Its own sides have disowned it.
Why does my heart deny its facets?
وماand what ليwith me كأنَas though الكهرباءُelectricity تمسنيtouches me

إذاwhenever لاحَappears ذاكَthat البدرُthe full moon أوor نمgives a hint حاجبهْits eyebrow
And what ails me, as though electricity were touching me,
It's as if electricity courses through me
Whenever that full moon appears, or its eyebrow gives a hint?
When the full moon rises or its eyebrow arches
أرونيshow me فؤاديmy heart كيفَhow صدعهُsplit it الأسىsorrow
وكيفَand how تولاهُtook hold of it الهوىpassion ومصائبهْand its calamities
Show me my heart—how sorrow has split it,
Show me, my heart, how sorrow has cracked it
And how passion and its calamities have taken hold of it.
And how passion has claimed it with its afflictions
إذاif كانَis قلبيmy heart لاnot يصاحبُkeeps company with همتيmy resolve
فماthen not هوit ليmine قلبٌa heart ولاnor أناI صاحبهْits companion
If my heart does not keep company with my resolve,
If my heart does not share my aspirations
Then it is no heart of mine, nor am I its companion.
Then it is no heart of mine, and I am not its keeper
ركبتُI rode لحينيto my doom فيin الترامِthe tram عشيةًone evening
أرىI see الفلكَthe celestial sphere الدوارَrevolving لاحتْappeared كواكبهْits stars
I rode the tram one evening, to my doom,
One evening I rode the tramway
Watching the revolving firmament, its stars coming into view,
And saw the revolving sphere, its stars appeared
وأحسبهُand I imagine it قلباًa heart يجاذبهُtugs at it الهوىpassion
فينقادُso it yields لاnot يدريknows بماof what هوit جاذبهْdrawing it
And imagining it a heart that passion tugs at,
I thought it a heart pulled by passion
So it yields, unaware of what is drawing it.
Yielding though unaware what draws it near
فلاحتْthen appeared لعينيto my eyes منfrom زواياهُits corners غادةٌa graceful maiden
هيshe البدرُthe full moon لكنْbut أطلعتْهُmade it rise مغاربهْits western horizons
Then from its corners a graceful maiden appeared to my eyes;
Then from its corners appeared a maiden
She was the full moon, yet its western horizons had made it rise.
The moon herself, though her setting she neared
تبسمُshe smiles أحياناًsometimes وتعبسُand she frowns تارةًat other times
كماas يخدعُdeceives الواهيthe feeble one القوىstrength منwhoever يحاربهْfights him
She smiled at times and frowned at others,
Smiling at times and frowning at others
As one feeble in strength deceives whoever fights him.
As the feeble-minded fight their phantom fears
وقدand indeed كتبتُI wrote فوقَabove المحاجرِthe eye sockets آيةًa verse
يطالعُstudies فيهاin it الحبُlove منwhoever لاnot تخاطبهْshe addresses him
And I had written a verse above the eye sockets;
I wrote above her brow a verse
In it, Love studies those she does not address.
Where love is glimpsed by those it does not address

When the heart saw her, it believed and began
When the heart saw it, it felt secure and emboldened
Writing to her within my ribs, while she wrote back to it.
To court her, writing on my ribs that caress
فماso not أناI إلاexcept والهوىand passion يستفزنيrouses me
إلىto حيثُwhere سلطانthe sovereign الهوىof passion عزَّgrew mighty جانبهْhis side
There I was, with passion urging me on
I am but passion's plaything
To where passion's sovereign stood unassailable.
Drawn to where its rule is strong and success assured
فقمتُso I rose قيامَthe rising الليثِof the lion فارقَleft غيلهُits thicket
وقدand already حُطِّمتْwere shattered أنياهُits fangs ومخالبهْand its claws
So I rose like a lion that had left its thicket,
I rose up like a lion leaving its den
Though its fangs and claws had been shattered.
After its shelters were smashed and claws demurred
وسلمتُand I greeted تسليمَa greeting البشاشةِof cheerfulness والهوىand passion

And I offered a cheerful greeting, while passion's
I resigned myself to joy and passion
Scorpions crept along the edges of my heart.
Creeping through my heart on scurrying feet
فأغضتْso she lowered her gaze حياءًin shyness ثمَّthen عادتْreturned فسلمتْthen she greeted

She lowered her eyes in shyness, then turned back and greeted me;
She lowered her gaze, then looked up and resigned
And after water's murkiness, its drinking places grow clear.
After the water's bitterness, clear and sweet
فللّهِso, by God ماhow أحلىsweet حديثاًa conversation سمعتهُI heard it
كأنيas though I were يتيمٌan orphan لاطفتهُtreated him tenderly أقاربهْhis relatives
By God, how sweet was the conversation I heard!
By God, how sweet the words I heard from her
As though I were an orphan whose kin had treated him tenderly.
As though an orphan comforted by his dear
هوit الخمرُwine لولاbut for طعمهاits taste وخمارُهاand its hangover
هوit السحرُmagic لولاbut for ذمَّهُits censure ومعائبُهُand its faults
It was wine, but without its taste or hangover;
It is the wine, but for its intoxication
It was magic, but without its censure or flaws.
It is the magic, but for its harm and fear
فقلتُso I said عرفتُI have known الحبَّlove واللهِby God أنهُthat it is
مطالبُdemands قلبٍof a heart لاnot تُحَدُّare limited مطالبهْits demands
So I said, 'I have known love; by God, it is
I said, I know love is, by God
The demands of a heart whose demands have no limit.'
A heart's demands that know no bounds or peer
فقالتْthen she said بلىyes indeed إنif شئتَyou wish زدتُكَI will add for you أنهُthat it is

She said, 'Yes; if you wish, I will add that it is
She replied, yes and if you wish, know too
The calamities of time, whose calamities cannot be counted.'
It is time's afflictions, countless and severe
فكاشفتهاso I revealed to her مابيwhat ails me غراماًa passion مبرحاًagonizing
يغالبنيwrestles with me فيهِover it النُّهىreason وأغالبهْand I wrestle with it
So I revealed to her what ailed me: an agonizing passion,
I unveiled to her a passionate, joyful love
Over which reason wrestled with me, and I wrestled with it.
Where duty contends with me and I persevere
وقلتُand I said ارىI think ذاthis القلبِheart جُنَّwent mad جنونهُits madness
وإلاand if not فماذاthen what فيin ضلوعيmy ribs يواثبهْleaps upon it
And I said, 'I think this heart has gone utterly mad;
I said, this heart is possessed by madness
Otherwise, what is springing at it within my ribs?'
Else what leaps inside my ribs with no veneer?
فهزتْthen she swayed قواماًa figure كالردينيlike a Rudayni spear مشرعاًleveled
وحينَand when أحسُّI feel الشعرَpoetry ماجتْsurged كتائبهْits battalions
Then she swayed her figure like a leveled Rudayni spear,
She swayed like a sapling, its branches outstretched
And when I felt poetry, its battalions surged.
And when I sensed the poetry, flags appeared
وأعجَبَهاand delighted her ماwhat قلتهُI said it فتَضَاحكَتْso she laughed
كأنيas though I were طفلٌa child فيin يديهاher two hands تلاعبهْshe plays with him
What I said delighted her, so she laughed,
She delighted in my words and laughed
As though I were a child in her hands, whom she was playing with.
As though I were a babe she bounced on her knee
وقدand indeed كانَhad been صدريmy breast أطفأextinguished اليأسَdespair نورهُits light
فأصبحَthen became مثلَlike الليلِthe night طارتْflew away غياهِبهْits deep darkness
And my breast's light had quenched despair;
Once my breast had doused hopes' light
Then it became like night, its darkness flown away.
And was as dark as the night that disappeared at dawn's first cheer
وقالتْand she said أخافُI fear الناسَpeople فالناسُfor people فيin الهوىlove
لئيمٌa scoundrel نداريwe placate أوor عذولٌa reprover نراقبهْwe watch him
She said, 'I fear people; in matters of love, they are
She said, I fear the people, for in love
Scoundrels we placate, or reprovers we keep an eye on.'
The ignoble spy and noble interfere
وعادتْand she returned تروعُfrightens القلبَthe heart لمdid not تدرِknow أننيthat I am
شديدُstrong مناطِthe tether القلبِof the heart صلبٌhard ترائبهْits breastbones
Again she frightened my heart, not knowing that I was
Then she startled my heart, not knowing
Firm in the heart's tether, hard in its breastbones.
My heart is firm, tough, it does not fear
ولماand when رأتنيshe saw me هائماًinfatuated غيرَnot هائبٍafraid
سواهاexcept her وقدماًand long ago ضيعَlet slip الصيدُthe quarry هائبُهْthe one fearing it
And when she saw me infatuated, fearing no one
When she saw me distraught but undismayed
But her—and long has the timid hunter let his quarry slip—
Another distracted her, the hunted deer
تولتْshe turned away وقالتْand she said تلكَthat عاقبةُthe outcome الهوىof love
وبعدَand after صدورِthe occurrence الأمرِof the deed تأتيcome عواقبهْits consequences
She turned away and said, 'Such is the outcome of love.'
She left saying, such is the fate of love
And once a deed is done, its consequences follow.
After the affair begins, ends draw near
فغادرتْso she left قلبيmy heart فيin التراموايthe tram وحدهُon its own
يناديcalls out ولكنْbut منwho عساهُmight he يجاوبهْanswer it
So she left my heart alone in the tram,
She left my heart alone on the tram
Calling out—but who might answer it?
Crying out, but who might answer its call and volunteer?
وعشتُand I lived بلاwithout قلبٍa heart وعفتُand I shunned هوىlove of الدُّمىthe dolls
ولاand not يردعِrestrains الإنسانَa person إلاexcept تجاربهْtheir experiences
And I lived without a heart, shunning the love of dolls;
I lived without a heart and gave up loving dolls
And nothing restrains a person but their own experiences.
Nothing deters a man like experience and souvenirs
