يعزِّيconsoles الناسُthe people بعضهمُsome of them
يعزِّي الناسُ بعضهمُ
ولاand not يجديهمُavails them شيَّاanything
ولا يجديهمُ شيَّا
People console one another,
People try to console each other
And it avails them nothing.
But it does them no good
فذاكَfor that one طويٌّfolded away وهذاand this one سوwill (first part of a split word)
فذاكَ طويٌّ وهذا سو
فَcompletion of the preceding ‘will’ يطويهِfolds him away الردىdeath طيَّاcompletely
فَ يطويهِ الردى طيَّا
For that one is folded away, and this one will
One has folded wings, the other twisted
Be folded away completely by death.
And soon fate will fold him too
يمينُan oath by اللهِGod لوif عقلواthey had sense
يمينُ اللهِ لو عقلوا
لعزّىwould surely console الميتُthe dead person الحيَّاthe living person
لعزّى الميتُ الحيَّا
By God, if they had sense,
If they had any sense
The dead would surely console the living.
The living would console the dead
