وليسَ للصدِّ

amid weariness.

With boredom

And for rejection

And grief has no remedy

وحرقةِ الوجدِ

وحرقةِ الوجدِ

سوى الوصالْ

سوى الوصالْ

and the burning of longing,

Except for the burning agony of passion

there is nothing but reunion.

Except for reunion

من الهوى يا ما أشدَّ الهوى

من الهوى يا ما أشدَّ الهوى

وذا الجوى يا ما أمضَّ الجوى

وذا الجوى يا ما أمضَّ الجوى

From love—oh, how fierce love is!

What intensity is the passion of love!

And this heartache—oh, how piercing heartache is!

What affliction is the agony of longing!

قلتُ نفسي والغرامُ انطوى

قلتُ نفسي والغرامُ انطوى

مذ نقضوا عهدي

مذ نقضوا عهدي

I spoke to myself, and passion faded away,

I said to myself, as love folded away

since they broke my pact

When they broke their vows

وأخلفوا وعدي

وأخلفوا وعدي

بذا المطال

بذا المطال

and broke their promise to me

And failed my hopes

with this delay.

With these trials

وكنتُ ذا حدِّ

وكنتُ ذا حدِّ

فصرتُ كالغمدِ

فصرتُ كالغمدِ

And I once had an edge,

And I was pushed

then became like a scabbard

So I became like a sword in its sheath

لدى النضالْ

لدى النضالْ

وبي ظما ويلاهُ من ذا الظما

وبي ظما ويلاهُ من ذا الظما

in combat.

During the struggle

And I thirst—alas for this thirst!

What pain and woe is this pain!

وقد أرى الماءَ ولكنما

وقد أرى الماءَ ولكنما

قوليَ يا ليت ويا ليتما

قوليَ يا ليت ويا ليتما

And I may see the water, yet

And though I see the water, I cannot reach it

my cry is 'Oh, if only!' and 'Oh, if only!'

Oh, would that! Oh, would that!

مُسَعَّرٌ كبدي

مُسَعَّرٌ كبدي

فلم أنلْ قصدي

فلم أنلْ قصدي

My liver is set ablaze,

My liver is inflamed

so I have not attained my aim,

I did not achieve my goal

ولا أنالْ

ولا أنالْ

وحفرةُ اللحدِ

وحفرةُ اللحدِ

nor shall I attain it.

Nor can I achieve it

And the grave's pit—

And the grave I dug alone

أنزلها وحدي

أنزلها وحدي

بكلُّ حال

بكلُّ حال

I shall descend into it alone,

In any case

whatever the circumstances.
