طالَhas grown long عليَّfor me ليليmy night
طالَ عليَّ ليلي
وليلكمand your night فيin قِصَرِshortness
وليلكم في قِصَرِ
My night has grown long for me,
My night has been prolonged
while your night is brief.
While your night is in a palace
منwhoever نامَsleeps ملءَto the fullness of العينِthe eye لاdoes not
من نامَ ملءَ العينِ لا
يعرفُknows أهلَthe people of السهرِwakefulness at night
يعرفُ أهلَ السهرِ
Whoever sleeps soundly does not
He who slept with eyes full
know those who lie awake.
Does not know the people of vigil
فسائلواso ask ريحَwind الصباthe east wind
فسائلوا ريحَ الصبا
تنبيكمit will inform you عنabout خبريmy condition
تنبيكم عن خبري
So ask the east wind;
So ask the morning breeze
it will tell you of my plight.
To inform you about my news
ياO قمرَmoon الآفاقِthe horizons هلhave you
يا قمرَ الآفاقِ هل
سرقتَyou have stolen حسنَthe beauty قمريmy moon
سرقتَ حسنَ قمري
O moon of the horizons, have you
O moon of horizons, have you
stolen the beauty of my moon?
Stolen the beauty of my moon?
فأنتَfor you مثلُlike وجههاher face
فأنتَ مثلُ وجهها
والليلُand the night مثلُlike الشعرِthe hair
والليلُ مثلُ الشعرِ
For you are like her face,
For you are like her face
and the night is like her hair.
And the night is like her hair
ذاتُshe with الجفونِthe eyelids قتلتْshe has slain
ذاتُ الجفونِ قتلتْ
بصارمٍwith a sharp sword منكسرِbroken
بصارمٍ منكسرِ
She of the eyelids has slain me
The one with eyelids has killed
with a broken blade.
With a broken sword
تلينُshe is gentle فيin حديثهاher speech
تلينُ في حديثها
وقلبهاand her heart كالحجرِlike stone
وقلبها كالحجرِ
She is gentle in her speech,
She is soft in her talk
yet her heart is like stone.
And her heart is like a stone
وأعقدَand took shape الثديانِthe two breasts فيin
وأعقدَ الثديانِ في
قوامهاher figure كالثمرِlike fruit
قوامها كالثمرِ
And the two breasts have taken shape on
And the breasts tied up
her figure like fruit.
In her stature like a fruit
لهفيmy lament علىfor دهرٍa time مضىgone by
لهفي على دهرٍ مضى
معَwith اللياليthe nights الغررِradiant
معَ الليالي الغررِ
Alas for a time gone by
My craving for the days gone by
with the radiant nights!
With the precious nights
مرَّit passed بهاwith them فلمand not تكنْthey were
مرَّ بها فلم تكنْ
إلاexcept كلمحِlike the blink of البصرِthe eye
إلا كلمحِ البصرِ
It passed with them; they were no more
She passed by and was not
than the blink of an eye.
But a blink of an eye
أماتنيhas killed me هذاthis الهوىpassion
أماتني هذا الهوى
قبلَbefore انقضاءِthe ending of العُمُرِlife
قبلَ انقضاءِ العُمُرِ
This passion has killed me
This love has killed me
before life's span was over.
Before the end of my life
أوقعنيit has cast me فيinto خطرٍperil
أوقعني في خطرٍ
منwho منقذيmy rescuer منfrom خطريmy peril
من منقذي من خطري
It has cast me into peril;
It has put me in danger
who will save me from my peril?
Who will save me from my danger?
لاdo not تعذلونيreproach me إنهُindeed it is
لا تعذلوني إنهُ
حكمُthe decree القضاfate والقدرِand destiny
حكمُ القضا والقدرِ
Do not reproach me; it is
Do not blame me, for it is
the decree of fate and destiny.
