لاnot يخملُobscures الصدَّthe rejection منهاfrom her والهوىand passion بدنيmy body
لا يخملُ الصدَّ منها والهوى بدني
ولاnor أطيقُI can endure بلاياafflictions الحبِّof love والزمنِand of time
ولا أطيقُ بلايا الحبِّ والزمنِ
My body does not conceal her rejection and passion.
Neither grief nor passion ever leaves me
Nor can I endure the afflictions of love and time.
Nor can I bear the torments of love and time
جسمٌa body تراهُyou see it فلاso not تدريyou know أمشتملٌis it wrapped?
جسمٌ تراهُ فلا تدري أمشتملٌ
بالثوبِin the garment أمor درجوهُthey wrapped it منهُfrom it فيin كفنِa shroud
بالثوبِ أم درجوهُ منهُ في كفنِ
A body you see, yet cannot tell: is it wrapped
A body you see but cannot tell
In a garment, or have they wrapped it in a shroud made from that cloth?
Whether clothed or shrouded in a coffin
يكادُalmost يومُthe day التناجيof intimate conversation أنto يطيَّرهُmake it fly
يكادُ يومُ التناجي أن يطيَّرهُ
مرُّthe passing الهواءِof the air معِwith الشكوىthe complaint إلىtoward الأذنِthe ear
مرُّ الهواءِ معِ الشكوى إلى الأذنِ
On the day of whispered confidences, it is almost carried aloft
On days of whispering he seems ready
By the air passing with the complaint toward the ear.
To fly away with the air and the sighs reaching his ear
لولاwere it not for الحبيبُthe beloved وقصديand my intention أنthat يبينَit become visible لهُto him
لولا الحبيبُ وقصدي أن يبينَ لهُ
يريهِit shows him ماwhat فعلتْhave done عيناهُhis two eyes لمdid not يبنِbecome visible
يريهِ ما فعلتْ عيناهُ لم يبنِ
Were it not for the beloved, and my wish that it appear to him,
If not for my beloved whom I intend
Showing him what his eyes have done, it would not be visible.
