إنindeed المعارفَknowledge للمعاليto lofty heights سلمٌa ladder
وألوand those possessing المعارفِknowledge يجهدونَstrive لينعمواso that they may live in ease
Knowledge is indeed a ladder to lofty heights.
Knowledge is a ladder to the heights,
And those who possess knowledge strive to live in ease.
And the knowledgeable strive to enjoy life.
والعلمُand learning زينةُthe adornment اهلهِof its possessors بينamong الورىhumankind
سيانَequal فيهin it أخوthe possessor of الغنىwealth والمعدمُand the destitute
And learning adorns its possessors among humankind.
Science is the adornment of its people among mankind.
In it, the wealthy and the destitute are equal.
Whether rich or poor, they are equal in it.
فالشمسُfor the sun تطلعُrises فيin نهارٍa day مشرقٍradiant
والبدرُand the full moon لاnot يخفيهِconceals it ليلa night مظلمُdark
For the sun rises in a radiant day,
The sun shines in a bright day,
And no dark night conceals the full moon.
And the moon does not hide it in a dark night.
لاno فخرَpride فيin نَسبٍlineage لمنfor one who لمdid not يفتخرْtake pride
بالعلمِin learning لولاwere it not for النابُthe fang ذلَّwould be humbled الضيغمُthe lion
There is no pride in lineage for one who takes no pride
No pride in lineage for one who does not take pride
In learning; without its fang, the lion would be humbled.
In knowledge - without it man is base.
وأخوand the man of العلاeminence يَسعىstrives فيدركُand attains ماwhat ابتغىhe sought
وسواهُand anyone other than him منabout أيامهِhis days يتظلمُcomplains
And the man of lofty ambition strives and attains what he sought,
The man of knowledge strives and attains what he seeks,
While another complains about his days.
While others merely complain of their days.
والخاملونَand the idle إذاwhen غدوتَyou set out تلومهمyou reproach them
حسبوكَthey imagine you فيin أسماعهمtheir ears تترنمُyou sing
And the idle, when you set out to reproach them,
When you rise early the slothful blame you,
Imagine you are singing in their ears.
Deeming your recitations mere singing.
فيamong الناسِpeople أحياءٌliving ones كأمواتِlike the dead of الوغىbattle
وخزthe piercing الأسنةِof spearheads فيهمin them لاnot يؤلمُcauses pain
Among people are living ones like the dead of battle:
Among people are those alive yet dead to purpose,
The piercing of spearheads causes them no pain.
Whose slander cannot hurt.
فاصدمْso strike جهالتهمtheir ignorance بعلكَwith your knowledge (probable correction of a typo) إنماindeed
صدمُstriking الجهالةِignorance بالمعارفِwith knowledge أحزمُmore prudent
So strike their ignorance with your knowledge; indeed,
Repel their ignorance with your knowledge.
Striking ignorance with knowledge is the sounder course.
Repelling ignorance with learning is wise.
واخدمand serve بلاداًa land أنتَyou منamong أبنائهاits sons
إنindeed البلادَlands بأهلهاthrough their people تتفدمُadvance (probable correction of a typo)
And serve a land whose son you are,
Serve the land of which you are a son,
For lands advance through their people.
For lands thrive through their people.
واملأand fill فؤادكَyour heart رحمةًwith compassion لذويfor those bearing الأسىsorrow
لاnot يرحمshows mercy الرحمنُthe Most Merciful منwhoever لاnot يرحمُshows mercy
And fill your heart with compassion for the sorrowful.
Fill your heart with compassion for the grieved,
The Most Merciful shows no mercy to those who show none.
For the Merciful shows no mercy to the merciless.
