كماas تُزَفُّis led forth as a bride البكرُthe virgin عندَat الزواجْmarriage
It was led forth, not yet deflowered by the mixing water,
It flows, and when the mood desires it,
As a virgin is led forth at her wedding.
Like a virgin bride on her wedding day,
فهللُso proclaimed God's oneness الشربthe drinkers سروراًfor joy بهاin it

So the drinkers cried 'No god but God!' for joy in it,
The drink brings joy and delight,
And the cock cried 'God is greatest!' and the hens cried out.
The rooster crows loudly and the chickens cluck,

As though they were monks within a church,
As if they were monks in a monastery,
Who had already lit a lamp in every cup.
Lighting a lamp in each cup,

As though its ailing reckoner had flung himself
As if the sick man who drank it,
On a bed, undergoing treatment.
Threw himself on a bed to receive treatment,

As though we, as we lay stricken by it,
As if when prostrated by it, we were
Were knights in battle, felled amid the swirling dust.
Knights of war felled in fierce combat,

From the hand of a dark-eyed, boyish beauty,
From the palm of a young maiden,
A tender, quivering maiden, her calves filling both anklets.
Full-hipped, tender-skinned,

Her glance pierced my heart, and it recoiled;
My heart doubted her at first glance and recoiled,
So it remained agitated as it gazed at her,
Yet could not stop glancing back at her,

Seeing her from behind its ribs,
Seeing her through his ribs,
As though it saw her through glass.
As if seeing her through glass.
