It is Time, coming to you or departing,
Is it time coming to you or departing,
And keeping its promise to you, or lying.
And whether your promise is true or lying,

يجدُّ ومن حولهُ لاعبُ
So leave it as it wills: who is it you see
So leave it as it willed, whoever you see,
Striving in earnest while those around him play?
Playing around while time keeps flying.

فمعطي النفوس هو السالبُ
And if you have hope, then be moderate,
And if you hope, be moderate,
For the giver of souls is their taker.
For He who gives souls is the Depriver.

Their experiences have indeed taught me
Experience has taught me
That contentment is what is required.
That being content is the duty.

فإنfor indeed التمنيwishful longing لهاto it صاحبُa companion
فإن التمني لها صاحبُ
So leave me, by your Lord—do not give me drink,
So leave me by your Lord, give me no water,
For wishful longing is its companion.
For wishing is its companion.

And if you refuse, then wait a moment:
If you refuse, then wait,
I am that crowned king.
I am that tyrannical king.

The earth belongs to me, its east and west,
Here is one side, and here another.

Veiled from me by the screen.
The chamberlain keeps them from me.

Whenever we drink, I see the earth walking,
And every man mounted above it.
And everyone upon it is a rider.

فرأسso the head of السماءthe sky بهwith it شائبُgray-haired
فرأس السماء به شائبُ
We cast sorrow's cloud up to the sky,
So the top of the sky has become white-haired by it.
So the sky's head is gray with it.

And part of wine's torment is that it brings wishes near,
And attend while I am absent.
And makes them present while I am absent.

It has a softness like the creeping of drowsiness,
No wonder that the drinker dreams.
So no wonder the drinker dreams.
