أمنis ... from among? الظباthe gazelles ذاكَthat one الغريرُthe guileless youth المعجبُthe captivating one
يلهوhe toys بحباتِwith the cores of القلوبِthe hearts ويلعبُand plays
Is that guileless, captivating youth one of the gazelles?
He toys with the very cores of hearts and plays.
قدindeed كنتُI was أحسبنيI thought myself رأيتُI had seen نظيرهُhis equal
حتىuntil بداhe appeared فرايتُand then I saw ماwhat لاnot أحسبُI imagine
I had indeed thought I had seen his equal,
until he appeared, and I saw what I could not imagine.
قمرa moon كأنَّas though الشمسَthe sun فوقَabove جبينهِhis brow
أضحتْhad come to be لوif أنَّthat الشمسَthe sun ليستْis not تغربُsetting
A moon—as though the sun above his brow
had come to shine, were the sun never to set.
وكأنَّand as though طرتهُhis forelock طليعةُthe vanguard of ليلةٍa night
حلكتْgrew pitch-dark فأشرقَthen shone فيin دجاهاits darkness كوكبُa star
And his forelock seems the vanguard of a night
that grew pitch-dark, then a star shone in its gloom.
جمعَhe gathered المحاسنَthe beauties فهيَso they تنسَare forgotten إنif يغبْhe is absent
وإذاand when بداhe appears فلهُthen to him المحاسنُthe beauties تنسبُare ascribed
He gathered all beauties; they are forgotten if he is absent,
and when he appears, all beauties are ascribed to him.
وعلقتهُand I grew attached to him كالظبيِlike a gazelle أحورَdark-eyed يُرتجىlonged for
وعشقتهُand I loved him passionately كالليثَlike a lion أزورَbroad-chested يرهبُfeared
And I grew attached to him, gazelle-like, dark-eyed and desired;
and loved him passionately, lion-like, broad-chested and feared.
يرنوhe gazes فتنتزعُand so snatch away القلوبَthe hearts لحاظُهُhis glances
وتكادُand almost أنفسناour souls عليهِover him تذهبُperish
He gazes, and his glances snatch hearts away,
and our souls almost perish for love of him.
وإذاand when مشىhe walks الخيلاءَwith swaggering pride فيamong عشاقِهِhis lovers
خلتَyou would think المليكَthe king مشىhad walked وقامَand rose الموكبُthe retinue
And when he walks in swaggering pride among his lovers,
you would think the king had stepped forth and the retinue risen.
وبثغرهِand in his mouth ظلمٌglistening saliva يحرمُis forbidden رشفهُsipping it
ظلماًunjustly وعهديand my understanding أنthat يحلis lawful الطيبُwhat is good
And in his mouth is glistening moisture, forbidden to sip,
unjustly—though I have known good things to be lawful.
ولقدand indeed تحكمَّhe held sway فيover النفوسِthe souls فبعضهاso some of them
أودىdestroyed العذابُtorment وبعضهاand some of them يتعذبُsuffer torment
And indeed he has held sway over souls: some of them
torment has destroyed, while others suffer on.
وعجبتُand I marveled أنthat الحبَّlove يقتلُkills أهلهُits devotees
ولأنand indeed that أكونَI should be بهِby it قتيلاًslain أعجبُmore astonishing
And I marveled that love kills its devotees,
and that I should be slain by it is more astonishing.
