إنَّ الأنامَ وحوشٌ

إنَّ الأنامَ وحوشٌ

وإنما الإسمُ ناسُ

وإنما الإسمُ ناسُ

Indeed, humans are beasts;

Indeed people are beasts

and 'people' is merely their name.

Only in name are they people

تخاتلٌ وزحامٌ

تخاتلٌ وزحامٌ

وقسوةٌ ومراسُ

وقسوةٌ ومراسُ

Mutual deceit and jostling,

Deceiving and jostling each other

and cruelty and strife.

Ruthlessness and deceit

فاخشَ الضعيفَ وإن لا

فاخشَ الضعيفَ وإن لا

نَ كم من الضعفِ باسُ

نَ كم من الضعفِ باسُ

So fear the weak, even if he grows gentle—

So be wary of the weak though he seems

how much might springs from weakness!

Harmless, for in weakness lies cunning

والماءُ ألينُ شيءٍ

والماءُ ألينُ شيءٍ

لكنهُ لا يداسُ

لكنهُ لا يداسُ

And water is the softest thing,

Water is the softest thing

yet it cannot be trodden upon.

Yet it cannot be trampled
