وتُقبِلُand you come كالغمامِlike a raincloud يفيضُpours forth حيناًfor a while
ويبقَand remains بعدَهُafter it أثرُthe trace الغَمامِthe raincloud
And you come like a raincloud, pouring for a while,
And kissing like pouring rain for a while
And after it, the raincloud's trace remains.
Leaving after it the trace of rain
وكمand how many فيamong الناسِthe people منof دَنِفٍsick with longing مَشوقٍyearning
إليكَfor you وكمْand how many شجيِّsorrowful مُستهامِlove-smitten
And how many among the people are sick with longing
And how many soft, yearning people among the people
For you, and how many are sorrowful and love-smitten!
Longing for you, and how many burning with passion
رمزتُI signaled لهُto him بألحاظِwith the glances اللياليthe nights
وقدwhile already عيَّwas incapable الزمانُtime عنِof الكلامِspeech
I signaled to him with the glances of the nights,
I signaled to him with the gazes of the nights
While time had become incapable of speech.
And time had given up on speaking
فظلَّso he kept يعدُّcounting يوماًa day بعدَafter يومٍa day
كماas اعتادواthey were accustomed لأيَّامِfor days السِّقامِillness
So he kept counting day after day,
So he kept counting a day after a day
As people are accustomed to counting days of illness.
As they were used to in the days of sickness
ومدَّand spread لهُfor him رواقُthe canopy الليلِthe night ظِلاًa shadow
ترفُّflutter عليهِover him أجنحَةُthe wings الظلامِdarkness
And night's canopy spread a shadow for him,
And the night spread for him a shaded porch
The wings of darkness fluttering over him.
On which the wings of darkness flutter
فباتَso he spent the night وملءَand filling عينيهِhis eyes منامٌsleep
لتنْفُضَthat you might shake off عنهُماfrom them both كَسَلَthe lethargy المَنامِsleep
So he spent the night with sleep filling his eyes,
So he slept with his eyes full of slumber
That you might shake from them the lethargy of sleep.
To shake off the drowsiness of sleep
ولمand did not أرَI see قبلَbefore حبَّكِloving you منany حبيبٍbeloved
كفىspared العُشاقَlovers لوعاتِthe torments الغرامِpassion
And before loving you I had never seen a beloved
And I have not seen before your love anyone
Who spared lovers the torments of passion.
Who sufficed the lovers the agonies of passion
فلوfor if تدرِknew العوالمُthe worlds ماwhat دريناwe have known
لحنتْthey would yearn للصلاةِfor prayer وللصيامِand for fasting
For if the worlds knew what we have known,
If the worlds knew what we knew
They would yearn for prayer and fasting.
They would incline to prayer and fasting
بنيO sons of الإسلامَIslam هذاthis خيرُthe best ضيفٍguest
إذاwhen غَشَيَvisits الكرِيمُthe noble one ذرىthe heights الكِرامِthe noble
O sons of Islam, this is the best of guests,
O my Islam, this is the best guest
When the noble one visits the heights of the noble.
When the generous man hosts the generous
يلُمكمْhe gathers you علىin خيرِthe best السجاياcharacter traits

He gathers you in the finest virtues,
Bringing you together on the best manners

فشُدُّواso tighten فيهِduring it أيديكُمyour hands بعزمٍwith resolve
كماas شدَّtightened his grip الكَمِيُّthe armored warrior علىon الحُسامِthe keen-edged sword
So, during it, tighten your grip with resolve,
So brace yourselves in it with determination
As the armored warrior gripped the keen-edged sword.
As Al-Kamil did with the swords
وقومواand stand in prayer فيduring لياليهِits nights الغواليprecious
فماfor ... not عاجتْthey stopped by عليكُمwith you للمُقامِto stay
And stand in prayer during its precious nights,
And stand during its sublime nights
For they have not come to you to stay.
For they were not too hard for staying up
وكمand how many نفرٍpeople تغرهمُbeguile them اللياليthe nights
وماand not خُلقواthey were created ولاnor هيَthey (the nights) للدَوامِfor permanence
And how many people the nights beguile,
While a group are tempted by the nights
Yet neither they nor the nights were made to last forever.
And they were not created for eternity
وخلواand cast off عادةَthe habit السفهاءِfools عنْكمaway from yourselves
فتِلكَfor those عوائدُthe customs القَومِthe people اللئامِignoble
And cast the habit of fools away from you,
And leave the habit of fools
For those are the customs of ignoble people.
Those are the morals of mean people
يُحلُّونَthey deem lawful الحَرَامَthe forbidden إذاwhen ماever (emphatic) أرَادواthey wish
وقدand indeed بَانَbecame distinct الحلالُthe lawful منَfrom الحرامِthe forbidden
They deem the forbidden lawful whenever they wish,
They make the unlawful lawful when they want
Though the lawful is clearly distinct from the forbidden.
And the lawful and unlawful had become clear
وماand not كلُّall الأنامِhumankind ذويpossessors of عُقولٍminds
إذاif عدَّواthey count البَهائِمَbeasts فيamong الأَنامِhumankind
And not all humankind possess reason,
Not all people are reasonable
If they count beasts among humankind.
When they count beasts among people
ومنand whoever روتْهُgave him his fill to drink مرضَعةُthe wet nurse المعاصيsins

And whoever the wet nurse of sins has suckled,
And whoever was nursed by the breastfeeding of disobedience
Then the days of weaning have come to him.
The days of weaning had come to him
