I see man grow tyrannical when he grows rich.

And how close descent is to ascent!

He thinks people are of an ancient creation,

And confines him—he has come to them anew.

Just as beasts, when grazing, turn blind

To the many thorns for the sake of a twig.

Whenever your pockets are of gold,

Then your sides have turned to iron.

And how strange that wealth should be a crown,

And love of wealth more like fetters.

So, alas for the poor, who have become

    Like wood dried for fuel.

Their tears are dinars, and yet

People have turned a blind eye to these coins.

    Is it not fraud—and injustice—

That striving's reward is given to idleness?

And whoever reaps—woe lies in failing

To drive birds away from the grain of the harvest.

And whoever bears a sword upon a neck,

Then the sword has thirsted for the jugular vein.

And mankind has always been, one toward another,

Envious, guarding against the envier's evil.

People say that wealth is water,

By which the diligent live alongside the dull.

Is filtered water like what you see

    Containing both impurities—mud and worms?

And how does the sea, surging in turmoil,

    Compare with swamps lying stagnant?

Thus humankind was created: some are wretched,

Misery clings to them, and some are happy.

And whoever resents Saturn—why does he not

Turn the star of good fortune with his palm?

And how great the gulf between copper, even if they polish it,

And the intense radiance of gold!

Laws have long prevailed in the universe,

So that mortality may be distinguished from immortality.
