أرى الهجرَ أن تذكرَ الهجرَ لي

أرى الهجرَ أن تذكرَ الهجرَ لي

فإنَّ القلوبَ بما تذكرُ

فإنَّ القلوبَ بما تذكرُ

I regard your mentioning estrangement to me as estrangement,

I see estrangement, though you evoke estrangement in me,

for hearts are moved by what you mention.

For hearts are moved by what they are reminded of.

وإنَّ السماءَ إذا أبرقتْ

وإنَّ السماءَ إذا أبرقتْ

غدتْ بعدَ إبروقها تمطرُ

غدتْ بعدَ إبروقها تمطرُ

And indeed, when the sky flashes with lightning,

And verily the sky, when it lightens,

it begins to rain after its flashing.

Becomes, after its lightning, rain pouring.

أخافُ عليكَ وما إن تخاف

أخافُ عليكَ وما إن تخاف

وأنتَ المطاعُ بما تأمرُ

وأنتَ المطاعُ بما تأمرُ

I fear for you, yet you have no fear,

I fear for you, though you have no fear,

and you are obeyed in whatever you command.

You who are obeyed in all you command.

وما آفةُ النفسِ بعدَ المتاب

وما آفةُ النفسِ بعدَ المتاب

غلا الغرورُ بمن يغفرُ

غلا الغرورُ بمن يغفرُ

And the soul's bane after repentance is nothing

And the soul's flaw after remorse

but presumption upon the one who forgives.

Is but the pride in one who forgives.
