قرأتُ الكتابَ فكانَ الفؤاد

كأنكَ تلمسهُ باليدِ

I read the letter, and my heart felt

I read the book, so my heart was

As though you were touching it with your hand.

As if you were touching it with your hand

وقبلتهُ ثمَّ أدنيتهُ

وقبلتهُ ثمَّ أدنيتهُ

من القلبِ كالعينِ والإثمدِ

من القلبِ كالعينِ والإثمدِ

And I kissed it, then drew it close

And I kissed it, then brought it close

To my heart, as close as the eye and kohl.

To my heart, like an intimate friend

فطارَ بهِ طيبُ أنفاسكم

فطارَ بهِ طيبُ أنفاسكم

إلى أنْ تعلقَ بالفرقدِ

إلى أنْ تعلقَ بالفرقدِ

Then the fragrance of your breaths carried it aloft

So the scent of your breath took wing with it

Until it clung to the Farqad star.

Until it clung to my temples

وقلتُ لعيني انظري للفؤاد

وقلتُ لعيني انظري للفؤاد

وما فعلَ الشوقُ بيَ واشهدي

وما فعلَ الشوقُ بيَ واشهدي

And I said to my eye: Look at my heart,

And I said to my eyes: "Look at my heart

And what longing has done to me, and bear witness.

And see what longing has done to me - bear witness."

فقالَ لها القلبُ هذا غرامي

فقالَ لها القلبُ هذا غرامي

وبعضُ غرامكِ أن تسهدي

وبعضُ غرامكِ أن تسهدي

Then the heart said to her: This is my passion,

So my heart said to them: "This is my passion,

And part of your passion is to lie awake.

And part of your passion is that you grow calm."

فخذْ منيَ اليومَ قلبي وعيني

فخذْ منيَ اليومَ قلبي وعيني

وذي الروحُ أسلمها في غدِ

وذي الروحُ أسلمها في غدِ

So take from me today my heart and my eye,

So take from me today my heart and my eyes,

And this soul—I shall surrender it tomorrow.

And tomorrow the owner of my soul will surrender them.
