أبيتُI pass the night وجنبيand my side ليسَdoes not يحويهِhold it مضجعُa bed
وبعضُand some of الذيthat which ألقىI find منof النومِsleep يُمنعُis withheld
I pass the night, and no bed can hold my side.
I spent the night with my side empty, not containing a bedmate
And some of the sleep I find is denied me.
And some of the sleep I got was denied
تقلبنيturn me over الأشواقُlongings وخزاًwith pricks كأننيas though I were
بكفِّin the hand of الهوىlove ثوبٌa garment رديمٌworn-out يُرقَّعُis patched
Longings turn me over with their pricks, as though I were
Yearning tosses me about painfully as if
A worn-out garment being patched in love's hand.
I were a tattered garment of passion being patched
وليand I have حاجةٌa need فيfor السهدِsleeplessness والسهدُand sleeplessness قاتليmy killer
بدمعيwith my tears وبعضُand some of الموتِdeath فيin الماءِwater ينقعُis steeped
I have need of sleeplessness, though sleeplessness kills me
I have a craving for chatting but chatting is my killer
With my tears—and some of death is steeped in water.
With my tears and some death in the water soaks
فياso, O أيهاyou النُّوَّامُsleepers ماwhat لذةُthe pleasure of الكرىslumber
أماis there not لكمfor you مثليlike me فؤادٌa heart وأضلعُand ribs
So, O sleepers, what is the pleasure of slumber?
So O you sleepers, what is the joy of friends
Have you not, like me, a heart and ribs?
Don't you have a heart like mine and ribs
وكيفِand how تنامُsleeps العينُthe eye والقلبُwhile the heart موجعٌin pain
وأنّىand how يصحُّis well القلبُthe heart والحسُّwhile feeling يوجعُcauses pain
And how can the eye sleep when the heart is in pain?
How can the eye sleep while the heart aches
And how can the heart be well when feeling brings pain?
And how can the heart be healthy when the senses hurt
كأنَّas though الهوىlove نورٌlight كأنَّas though بنيthe sons of الهوىlove
كواكبٌstars إمَّاwhen جنَّهاenfolds them الليلُnight تلمعُgleam
Love is like light; the sons of love are like
It's as if passion is light; it's as if the passionate
Stars that gleam when night enfolds them.
Are planets, either veiled by night or shining
وماand not انفكَّhas ceased نورُthe light of الحبِّlove فيin كلِّevery كائنٍbeing
ولكنbut لأمرٍfor some reason بعضهُsome of it ليسَdoes not يسطعُshine
And love's light has never ceased to dwell in every being,
The light of love has not ceased in any being
But for some reason, part of it does not shine.
But some of it is not bright for a reason
وماand not كلُّevery مصباحٍlamp بذيendowed with كرباءةٍelectricity
Joshua
Not every lamp is endowed with electric power,
Not every lamp is like a shining star
Nor is everyone who sees the sun a Joshua.
Nor does every person see the rising sun glow
وياand, oh شدَّhow severe ماwhat ألقىI endure منfrom الحبِّlove وحدهُit alone
فكيفَthen how وفيwhile in طبعِthe nature of الحبيبِthe beloved التمنعُaloofness
And oh, how grievous is what I suffer from love alone!
Oh how much love I have encountered alone
How then, when aloofness is in the beloved's nature?
So how can reserve exist in the nature of the beloved
هلis ...? الحبُّlove إلاanything but ماwhat ترىyou see منof فضيحةٍscandal
وماand what المسكُmusk لولاwere it not for أنهُthat it يتضوَّعُgives off fragrance
Is love anything but the scandal you see?
Isn't love just what you see of disgrace
And what would musk be if it did not spread its fragrance?
And what is musk without it being moist
كأنَّas though فؤاديmy heart شعلةٌa flame قدalready تعلقتْhas fastened itself
بجسميto my body وطبعُand the nature of النارِfire فيin العودِwood تسرعُrapid spreading
My heart is like a flame that has fastened itself
It's as if my heart is a flame that attached itself
To my body, and fire's nature is to race through wood.
To my body and fire's nature in wood is to hurry
وماand not أناI وحديI alone منwhom يقولونَthey call عاشقٌa lover
ولكننيbut I وحديI alone الذيthe one who يتوجَّعُsuffers
I am not the only one they call a lover,
I'm not alone in saying "lover"
But I alone am the one who suffers.
But I'm alone in suffering
وفيand in كلِّevery عينٍeye أدمعٌtears غيرَexcept أننيthat I
لعينيَّfor my two eyes منfrom دونِapart المساكينِthe wretched أدمعُtears
And every eye has tears, yet I
And in every eye there are tears, but I
Have tears in my eyes that the wretched do not share.
More than the miserable, weep for my eyes
أعينيَO my eye ماnot دمعيmy tears عليَّto me بهيِّنٍof little account
فكمso how long ذاthis وكمand how long ذاthis تجزعينَyou grieve وأجزعُand I grieve
O my eye, my tears are no small matter to me.
My eyes, my tears are not cheap
How long, how long will you grieve, and I grieve?
So why do you panic and make me panic
كأنكِas though you were فيin كلِّall القلوبِhearts فمنso whoever بكىweeps
بكيتِyou weep لهُfor him والحرُّand the noble man بالناسِby people يُخدَعُis deceived
As though you were in every heart: whoever weeps,
It's as if you are in every heart, so whoever cried
You weep for him; the noble man is deceived by people.
You cried for him while people are deceived by heat
أحاطتْhave surrounded بيَaround me الأرزاءُmisfortunes منfrom كلِّevery جانبٍside
كأنَّas though الرزاياcalamities تحتَbeneath جنبيَّmy two sides مصرعُa deathbed
Misfortunes have surrounded me on every side,
Hardships have surrounded me from every side
As though calamities were a deathbed beneath my sides.
As if adversities lie in ambush under my side
كأنيَas though I were فيamid الآمالِhopes زورقُa boat لجَّةٍdeep water
إذاwhen احتملتهُit bears it up كانَis للخفضِto be lowered يرفعُis raised
Amid hopes I am like a boat on the deep:
I'm like a small boat in hopes
When the deep bears it up, it is raised only to be lowered.
Whenever it carries me it's raised to be lowered
وماand not كلُّeveryone منwho تحنوbends tenderly علىover الطفلِthe child أمهُhis mother
ولاnor كلُّeveryone منwho تدنيهِdraws him close منfrom (unclear here) للثديِto the breast مُرضعُa wet nurse
Not every woman who bends tenderly over a child is his mother,
Not every woman who pities a child is its mother
Nor is every woman who draws him to the breast a wet nurse.
Nor is every one brought close to the breast a wet nurse
فهلso will ترجعِreturn الدنياthe world كماas قدalready عهدتُهاI knew it
وهلand will ماwhat مضىhas passed منof سالفِthe earlier part of العمرِlife يرجعُreturn
Will the world then return as I once knew it?
So will the world return as I knew it
And will what has passed of life's earlier days return?
And will what has passed of my life come back
وليand I have فيin الهوىlove شمسٌa sun إذاwhen هيَit اشرقتْrises
رأيتُI see بهاby it سحبَthe clouds of الأسىsorrow كيفَhow تُقشعُare dispersed
In love I have a sun; when it rises,
And I have in love a sun, so when it rises
I see by it how the clouds of sorrow are dispersed.
I see through it how the clouds of sorrow dissipate
ولكنْbut لحظيby my luck أنَّthat حظيَmy lot ليلهاits night
ومنand who ذاis it يخالُimagines الشمسَthe sun فيin الليلِthe night تطلعُrising
But my luck has it that my lot is its night.
But my misfortune is that its fate is nighttime
And who imagines the sun rising at night?
And who can imagine the sun rising at night
كلاناboth of us بهِwithin him وجدٌlonging ولكنهُbut it is الهوىlove
دلالٌcoquetry وهجرانٌand abandonment ويأسand despair ومطمعُand a cause for hope
Both of us feel longing, but this is love:
We're both passionate but it is love
Coquetry and abandonment, despair and hope.
That is flirtatious, aloof, hopeless, and hopeful
فإنfor if أستبنْI discern ماwhat أصنعُI should do اليومَtoday يأتنيcomes to me
غدٌa tomorrow بالذيwith what لمdid not أستبنْI discern كيفَhow أصنعُI should act
For if I discern what to do today, there comes to me
So if I examine what I will do today
A tomorrow with what I have not discerned how to handle.
Tomorrow comes with what I did not examine, how will I act
