بليتُI was afflicted بهذاwith this الحبِّlove أحملهُI bear it وحديon my own
وكلٌّand everyone لهُhe has وجدُlonging المحبِّthe lover's ولاbut not وجديmy longing
I have been afflicted with this love; I bear it alone.
I have been afflicted with this love, bearing it alone,
And everyone has a lover's longing, but not my longing.
While everyone has a lover, I have none but my agony.
هيshe الحسنُbeauty فيin تمثالهاher likeness وأناand I الهوىpassion
فلاso no عاشقٌlover قبليbefore me ولاand no عاشقٌlover بعديafter me
She is beauty in her sculpted likeness, and I am passion.
She is beauty personified, and I am passion itself,
So there is no lover before me, nor any lover after me.
No lover was there before me, nor shall one come after me.
وفيand in كلِّevery وادٍvalley للغرامِfor love بشاشةٌgladness
فشأنيso my state فيin باريسَParis شأنيmy state فيin نجدِNajd
And in every valley there is gladness for love.
In every valley of passion there is vitality,
So I am the same in Paris as in Najd.
My state in Paris is like my state in Najd.
ولمand not أنسَI forget يوماًa day جئتهاI came to her ذاتَone صبحةmorning
عليلاًailing كماjust as هبَّblew النسيمُthe breeze بلاwithout وعدِan appointment
Nor have I forgotten the day I came to her one morning,
Never did I come to her one morning,
Ailing, as the breeze blew in, without an appointment.
Feeble, without her breeze promising me nothing.
وكنتَand you were وكانتand she was والدلالُand coyness يصدُّهاholds her back
فتبديso she reveals الذيwhat أخفيI conceal وتخفيand she conceals الذيwhat أبديI reveal
And you were there, and she was there, while coyness held her back.
You were, and she was, while coquetry kept her away,
So she reveals what I conceal, and conceals what I reveal.
Revealing what I hid, hiding what I displayed.
وماand not زلتُI ceased حتىuntil كاتمتنيshe shared secretly with me قبلةًa kiss
علىwith حذرٍcaution حتىeven منof الحليْthe jewelry والعقدِand the necklace
And I persisted until she shared a secret kiss with me,
I persisted until she hid a kiss from me
Wary even of the jewelry and the necklace.
Cautiously, even from her ornaments and necklaces.
وكناand we were كمثلِlike الزهرِthe blossoms يلثمُkisses بعضهُsome of itself
ولاand no صوتَsound للنسرينِfor the wild rose فيon شفةِthe lip الوردِof the rose
And we were like blossoms kissing one another,
We were like flowers kissing one another,
And the wild rose has no voice upon the rose's lip.
The eagles silent on the lips of the roses.
وكانَand was فميmy mouth فيهِin it إليهاto her رسالةًa message
فسلمهاso it delivered it فاهاher mouth وحمِّلضand [corrupted word; possibly 'was charged'] بالردِwith the reply
And in it my mouth was a message to her;
My mouth was to her a missive,
So it delivered it to her mouth and [possibly was charged] with the reply.
Which she received through her mouth and charged with answering.
إذاif لمnot يكنْbe عندَwith الحبيبةِthe beloved ليfor me جوىًaching love
فقولواthen say لماذاwhy لاnot يكونُbe الجوىthe aching love عنديwith me
If my beloved feels no aching love for me,
If my beloved does not confide in me,
Then tell me why aching love should not be mine.
Say, why cannot confiding be my lot?
