لمdid not يألُstint صبراًpatience عليكَwith you حينَwhen هجرتهُyou forsook him
لوif كانَwas ينفعُbe of use صبرهُhis patience لسلاكاhe would have forgotten you
He showed unstinting patience with you when you forsook him.
Had his patience been of use, he would have forgotten you.
تطويfold up اللياليthe nights فيin هواكَlove for you حياتهُhis life
وأراهُand I see him ينساهاhe forgets it ولاand not ينساكاhe forgets you
The nights fold away his life in love for you,
And I see him forget it, but not forget you.
رُحماكَyour mercy! ياO منone who أطالَhas prolonged بليتيmy affliction
ياO منone who أطالَhas prolonged بليتيmy affliction رُحماكاyour mercy!
Have mercy, O you who have prolonged my affliction!
O you who have prolonged my affliction, have mercy!
أعليَّupon me? هذاthis الهجرُthe estrangement طالَhas lasted long عذابهُits torment
وعلىand upon الذيthe one who يهواكَloves you صالَhas pounced هواكاlove for you
Is it upon me that this estrangement's torment has lingered,
And upon the one who loves you that love for you has pounced?
فلقدfor indeed عرفتُI have known بكَthrough you الشقاmisery بعدَafter الهناbliss
لماwhen عضبتَyou grew angry (likely intended: غضبتَ) عليwith me بعدafter رضاكاyour pleasure
For through you I have known misery after bliss,
When you grew angry with me after being pleased with me.
نهنهْrestrain دموعكَyour tears ياO حزينُsorrowful one فإنهاfor they
دُوَلٌturns of fortune سيضحكَwill make you laugh الذيthe one who أبكاكاmade you weep
Restrain your tears, O sorrowful one, for they
Are turns of fortune; he who made you weep will make you laugh.
