أما كفاكَ الفراقُ غدرا

أما كفاكَ الفراقُ غدرا

وبعدَ هذي الديارِ هجرا

وبعدَ هذي الديارِ هجرا

Has parting not been treachery enough for you,

Was separation not enough betrayal

And distance from these dwellings abandonment enough?

And after these dwellings, estrangement

أسائلُ البدرَ عنكَ حيناً

أسائلُ البدرَ عنكَ حيناً

وأسألُ الشمسَ عنكَ طورا

وأسألُ الشمسَ عنكَ طورا

At times I ask the full moon about you,

Sometimes I ask the moon about you

And at others I ask the sun about you.

And sometimes I ask the sun about you

وكلما غردتْ حمامٌ

وكلما غردتْ حمامٌ

في الأيكِ طارَ الفؤادُ طيرا

في الأيكِ طارَ الفؤادُ طيرا

And whenever doves sing

And whenever a dove coos

In the grove, my heart takes flight.

In the branches, my heart takes flight

قضى علينا الغرامُ أنا

قضى علينا الغرامُ أنا

نتخذُّ الليلَ فيهِ سترا

نتخذُّ الليلَ فيهِ سترا

Love has decreed for us that we

Our love decreed that I

Take the night as a veil for our love.

Take the night as a cover

فمن عيونٍ تبيتُ عبْرى

فمن عيونٍ تبيتُ عبْرى

ومن عيونٍ تبيتُ سَكْرى

ومن عيونٍ تبيتُ سَكْرى

So some eyes spend the night tearful,

So from some eyes I spend the night shedding tears

And some eyes spend the night intoxicated.

And from some eyes I spend the night drunk

وكلُّ يومٍ يخلفُ يوماً

وكلُّ يومٍ يخلفُ يوماً

أراهُ دهراً يعقبُ دهراً

أراهُ دهراً يعقبُ دهراً

And every day that follows another—

And each day that passes

I see it as an age following an age.

I see it as an era succeeded by an era

يا أحسنَ الفاتنينَ قدّاً

يا أحسنَ الفاتنينَ قدّاً

وارفعَ المالكينَ قدرا

وارفعَ المالكينَ قدرا

O fairest in form of all who enchant,

O fairest of the beautiful in stature

And highest in rank of all who hold sway!

And highest of the angels in rank

فتنتَ مصرا فهل تولى

فتنتَ مصرا فهل تولى

يوسفُ يا ذا الدلالِ مصرا

يوسفُ يا ذا الدلالِ مصرا

You have enchanted Egypt—has

You captivated Egypt, so did

Joseph, O coy charmer, assumed rule over Egypt?

Joseph, O owner of grace, leave Egypt?

لو عشقَ الشمسَ فيكَ قومٌ

لو عشقَ الشمسَ فيكَ قومٌ

لكانَ هذا الجمالُ عذرا

لكانَ هذا الجمالُ عذرا

If people loved the sun within you,

Had people fallen for you

This beauty would be their excuse.

Your beauty would've been an excuse

ما إن حسبتُ الزمانَ يوماً

ما إن حسبتُ الزمانَ يوماً

يتركُ نفسي عليكَ حسرى

يتركُ نفسي عليكَ حسرى

I never once imagined that time

Never did I think time would

Would leave my soul grieving over you,

Leave my soul longing for you

إذ تتثتَّى جوىً وحسناً

إذ تتثتَّى جوىً وحسناً

وإذ تجنَّى هوىً وكبرا

وإذ تجنَّى هوىً وكبرا

As you sway with love's ache and beauty,

As you were dyed beauty and charm

And as you act cruelly in passion and pride.

And as you were picked passion and pride

نقتسمُ العيشَ لا نبالي

نقتسمُ العيشَ لا نبالي

أكانَ حلواً أم كانَ مُرّا

أكانَ حلواً أم كانَ مُرّا

We share life, not caring

We share life, we do not care

Whether it be sweet or bitter.

If it was sweet or bitter

وقد تركنا زيداً وعَمْرا

وقد تركنا زيداً وعَمْرا

يضربُ زيدٌ هناكَ عَمْرا

يضربُ زيدٌ هناكَ عَمْرا

And we have left Zayd and Amr—

We left Zayd and Amr

Zayd striking Amr over there.

There, Zayd hits Amr

وقد أبانتْ لنا الليالي

وقد أبانتْ لنا الليالي

أن لهذي الحياةِ سرّا

أن لهذي الحياةِ سرّا

And the nights have revealed to us

And nights revealed

That this life has a secret:

That life has a secret

بينا يكونُ الزمانُ عُسْرا

بينا يكونُ الزمانُ عُسْرا

إذا تراهُ استحالَ يُسرا

إذا تراهُ استحالَ يُسرا

While time is hardship,

While time seems difficult

Suddenly you see it transformed into ease.

If you see it, it changes to ease
